After almost a decade of talk, Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit a Life is Strange adaptation, with Charlie Covell as showrunner (End of the F***ing World, Kaos). Square Enix, Story Kitchen, and LuckyChap are all onboard as producers.
The series will focus on the original game, with Max as the main character. She is a photography student who can rewind time, and she saves her childhood friend, Chloe. Together, they will investigate the disappearance of a classmate and uncover the dark secrets lurking in their town.
Prime Video Is Becoming the Place for Gamers
Life is Strange will be exclusive to Amazon Prime Video, who have been building a solid track record for video game adaptations, including Fallout, Tomb Raider, and God of War.
Nick Pepper of Amazon MGM said the project is “in the best hands” with Charlie Covell and her team, promising an adaptation that will allow everyone to enjoy the amazing story of Max and Chloe again.
How Will Choices Work?
One challenge is translating the game’s choice-based gameplay into a linear series. In the game, players influence the story and unlock multiple endings, and that is a core part of the experience.
The show can not give viewers the same level of interactivity, so a lot of people are curious to see how Covell will capture the emotional depth, queer storytelling, and tough decisions that made the original game so iconic.
A lot of people also wonder what ending will be chosen. There is no way to make both function, and a part of the community is scared they will be disappointed if their ending was not picked!
