Ashes of Creation is currently in its “Early Access” stage, where it’s now available on Steam and available at a lower price point ($49.99). As more and more players jump in and begin their experiences with Ashes of Creation, they will quickly realize that the world of Verra can be a bit overwhelming.
To support new players and help them gain a better understanding of how to get started in Ashes of Creation, we’ve created an Ashes of Creation Early Access Beginner’s Guide.
Below are a handful of tips and tricks that will help any player get started in Ashes of Creation. These tips and tricks are captured in the video below too.
Choosing Your Archetype
One of the first and most important decisions you’ll make in Ashes of Creation is choosing your archetype. All eight archetypes are now available to play in the Early Access, and it includes Fighter, Bard, Tank, Mage, Ranger, Cleric, Rogue, and Summoner.
This decision cannot be changed. Once you select your primary archetype, that is permanently set for that character, and if you want to change it, then you’ll need to start a new character.
As the game further develops, you will eventually be able to choose a secondary archetype, which is interchangeable and will slightly alter your character’s skills.

Starting Regions
There are two different starting regions you can choose from within Ashes of Creation. This includes The Riverlands and The Anvils.
In the current state of the game, The Riverlands has a more in-depth questing route and is likely the better choice for first-time players and those that fon’t have a full 8-man team.
In unique cases, it may be worth going The Anvils if you have a full group and a strong understanding of the different grind zones in the area, as it will be less competitive as popular grind spots in The Riverlands.
Keep in mind that as the game continues to develop, The Anvils will likely pick up additional updates to make it a stronger option than what it is today.
Choosing Your Weapons
As soon as you finish creating your character, you will be spawned into Verra and will be able to select your starter weapons. These weapons will be scattered around you, and you will be able to walk around and select two weapons – one close-ranged weapon, and one ranged weapon.
Even if you are a fighter, you will be able to use two weapons (including a ranged weapon).
As you use weapons, they will progress and level up just like your character level, which will unlock unique passives to dish off more damage, heal more, or increase block chances depending on the weapon you’re upgrading.
Do Your Quests
One of the best things you can do when you take your first few steps in Verra is to complete your quests. You’ll see small icons appear on your mini map indicating locations of where you can accept new quests.
Accepting and completing these quests will not only be the fastest way to gain your first few levels, but it will also help you take the first few steps you need to complete some requirements within the “Destiny” system.
By doing certain tasks within the “Destiny” system, you’ll be able to get unique rewards ranging from experience, armor, weapons, glint, and more.
By completing all of these intro quests, you’ll likely hit around level 8 or so, where you will then have to transition to mob grinding to further progress your character.
Death Penalties
It’s important to know that dying in Ashes of Creation has penalties. If you die, you will lose some experience that you’ll need to regain, and you’ll also drop half of the items within your “Materials” tab.
If you go back to the location where you died, you’ll be able to loot your ashes and regain half of the items you’ve lost. Be fast though – other players can loot your ashes as well and steal your loot!
The Glint System
When you defeat enemies in Ashes of Creation, you don’t get old. Instead, you get glint. Glint is a unique currency in this game that you can use to either purchase materials for crates and caravans, or sell directly for gold from NPCs within the game. Although you can very easily sell glint for gold, it’s best practice to use glint to exchange for materials for crates and caravans to make even more gold.
Processing Materials
As you explore the world of Verra, you’ll be able to use your gathering tools to collect raw wood, ores, fish, herbs, and more. You can then take those raw resources and process them at certain stations in settlements to turn into processed goods that can then be used for crafting.
What’s great about the processing system is that you not only get the processed materials, but you also gather character experience every time you process, making it a great way to progress your character’s level.
As you continue to play Ashes of Creation, you will learn more and more unique tips and tricks that will further progress your character. These tips are everything you need though to get started!
