Mario Kart World not only looks great on the Switch 2, and is really fun, but it also came with a few new mechanics, that not everyone is aware of. There is a unique directional item throwing mechanic that actually lets you throw items in any direction you want, not just forward or backward like in past games.
How Does It Work?
As you can see in the Reddit post, you can aim and shoot your items sideways now if you want! Here is a small tutorial on how the it works:
- Basic Throws remain unchanged. In order to do those, you need to:
- Press R to throw forward
- Hold left stick down and R to throw backwards
- For Bananas, it is reversed:
- They are thrown backwards by default
- Hold left stick up and R to throw forward
- In order to throw in any direction you need to:
- Move the camera using the right stick
- Press R. The item goes in the direction the camera is pointing
- Yes, this means it can even go sideways or behind you
Keep in mind as well that you can not throw ALL items this way. It only works with Bananas, Green Shells, Fire Flowers, Ice Flowers, Boomerang Flowers, Bob-omb, Hammer. Blue, Red, and Coin Shells do not work. Imagine being able to throw a Blue Shell in the direction you want!
Sadly, this mechanic is not that easy to use. It is pretty cool to be able to throw items in any direction you want, but during a race, it is not the most comfortable to use:
- If you try to move the camera while holding A to accelerate, it is a bit tricky
- The right stick can feel really slow, especially when trying to turn and throw in some tight turn
- It only works if you are using Joy-Con pairs or a Pro Controller
- If you are using a single Joy-Con it does not work at all, you need both
Tips to Make It Easier to Use
- Turn on the Auto-Acceleration. This means your thumb is free to aim and throw
- You can actually re-map the buttons in the Switch 2 settings
- You can use the directional throw during jumps or glides. Usually you are not accelerating during those moments, and so your thumb is free again
One thing is sure, you can have a ton of fun throwing items in the direction you want, so we recommend you try it out! And for more gaming information, check out our latest news!
