Black Myth: Zhong Kui Is Just the Beginning of a Mythic Universe

Black Myth: Zhong Kui is the next game in the Black Myth franchise, after Black Myth: Wukong

Game Science is not stopping with Black Myth: Wukong. During Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, the studio revealed the next entry in the series, and it is called Black Myth: Zhong Kui. On top of that, latest leaks also revealed that there are plans to expand the universe even further!

Black Myth: Zhong Kui

Zhong Kui is a famous figure in Chinese mythology, known as a demon queller who hunts down spirits and evil beings. Wukong was all about the Monkey King; Zhong Kui, on the other hand, seems to be a completely different storyline, centered around its own mythic hero.

An Expanded Universe Inspired by Chinese Mythology?

On top of the upcoming game, there is another big surprise! The latest leaks revealed that Game Science might be building something much bigger than a single sequel. Next to Wukong and Zhong Kui, the studio has already trademarked several other titles under the Black Myth name, including:

  • Black Myth: Jiang Ziya
    • Jiang Ziya was the founding monarch of the Qi state, also worshiped as a war god since the Han and especially Tang dynasties. He was also celebrated in Chinese literature as one of the main heroes in the Ming-era (Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi))
    • He also helped overthrow the Shang dynasty and establish the Zhou dynasty.
    • In Chinese pop culture, he is often also depicted as an old man with a fishing rod who hides great wisdom and magical powers.
    • If Game Science adapts him, it could be a big, political/war-focused myth story.
  • Black Myth: Xiao Qian
    • Likely refers to Nie Xiao Qian, a ghostly female character from Pu Songling’s Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio.
    • In the story, she is a beautiful ghost forced to lure men to their deaths, but eventually falls in love with a human scholar.
    • This could lead to a darker, tragic, or romance-heavy “ghost story” game.
  • Black Myth: Da Huang
    • Literally means “Great Wilderness”.
    • In mythology, it often refers to a mythical, untamed land filled with ancient beasts and deities.
    • The term appears in Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), describing strange creatures.
    • This could be an open-world type setting full of mythical monsters.
  • Black Myth: Shan Hai
    • Almost certainly linked to the Shan Hai Jing (Classic of Mountains and Seas).
    • One of the oldest Chinese texts, full of mythical creatures, gods, demons, and strange lands.
    • If Game Science adapts this, it could be a massive bestiary-style adventure, similar to Monster Hunter meets myth.
  • Black Myth: Sou Shen
    • Refers to Soushen Ji (In Search of the Supernatural), a classic collection of ghost stories and myths written during the Eastern Jin dynasty.
    • Contains short tales about gods, spirits, demons, and immortals.
    • Perfect inspiration for a supernatural, anthology-like game.

A Mythological Franchise in the Making

That is six different names already registered, meaning the team has long-term plans for the franchise. It is unknown if all of them will turn into full games, but it is clear that Game Science wants Black Myth to grow into a mythological universe, exploring different legends and heroes from Chinese folklore.

The studio also mentioned that Wukong itself is “not over,” so you can expect more content or spin-offs linked to the Monkey King as well.

With Black Myth: Zhong Kui now officially in development, the future of the series looks huge. What started as one of 2024’s most anticipated action RPGs might end up being the beginning of a new myth-inspired gaming universe!
