Call of Duty Film Signs on Yellowstone, Friday Night Lights Creators

Taylor Sheriden and Peter Berg have been tapped to produce the Call of Duty movie.

With video game movies gaining ever more popularity, it was only a matter of time before Call of Duty got its chance at the silver screen. Back in September, Paramount and Activision signed a deal to produce a movie based on the legendary FPS series, with possible TV options. While we don’t know which CoD property will be the movie’s focus, we now know two of the names behind the camera. And they bring an impressive filmography.

Renowned Television Creators Signed to Produce

Paramount’s picks to develop the film aren’t just known for movies, but hit television series as well. According to Deadline, Taylor Sheridan and Peter Berg will produce and co-write the film, with Berg also set to direct. Sheridan is no stranger to Paramount, having produced shows like Yellowstone and Lioness. Berg, meanwhile, has credits on American Primeval and Painkiller, and is the executive producer for the Friday Night Lights reboot. Another cause for optimism is Sheridan and Berg’s lifelong friendship. The two have collaborated on multiple films, including Hell or High Water, which received four Oscar nominations.

So how long before the next major update? Given the duo’s television pedigree, Call of Duty probably won’t be a rush job for the studio. A commonly cited timeframe for script production is 10-12 weeks for a first draft, with 4-8 weeks for rewrites. But given Sheriden and Berg’s expertise and comfort working together, a script may come out much faster, perhaps in less than two months. It’s entirely possible principal photography could begin in early 2026 if things go smoothly.

All of this is speculation of course, and it’s possible the movie will end up in development hell (see the Bioshock movie). But in the past several years, Hollywood has become much better at turning around video game films, likely due to massive profits at the box office. This year’s A Minecraft Movie brought home nearly one billion at the box office, and the Super Mario Bros. movie from 2023 surpassed that. So if you’re a CoD fanatic, rest assured the movie will probably be in your local cinema sooner rather than later.
