Details, and Possible Name, of Steam’s Next VR Headset

Since VR gaming started to gain more prominence, we’ve seen a range of headsets hit the market. Valve has been no exception to this, releasing the Valve Index in June of 2019. Selling nearly 150K units that year, available supply of headsets was reduced when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, straining manufacturing. That, and the higher price point compared to other headsets, may have been a reason the Index only accounts for 13% of VR devices connected to Steam. But it’s 2025 and Valve is looking to follow up their first headset with something new.

Steam Frame, the Next Step for VR?

According to a trademark application filed on September 2nd, the Steam Frame may be the awaited successor to the Index. Valve insider Brad Lynch has been actively following the development of the Frame, noting the company is focusing on branding the device a “spatial computer.” In essence, the Frame may be designed with greater movement functionality, and able to be independent of any desktop. One thing he points to is the ability to manage the VR lighthouses from within the headset itself. Still, the Frame will likely be able to connect to PC, as indicated by a WiFi 6E dongle, enabling better connection to desktop. The 3D models of the Frame’s controllers have also been datamined, with a full view available in programs like blender.

While details are light, Lynch noted when Valve announced the Steam Deck in 2021 the trademark application was filed the day before. Does that mean a Steam Frame announcement is soon? Maybe. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any new info.
