Dragon Quest VII Remake Rumored for 2026, But Fans Want DQ9

Dragon Quest VII

Is Square Enix really remaking Dragon Quest VII again?

According to a new report from MP1st, Square Enix is apparently working on a remake (yes, full remake – not a remaster) of Dragon Quest VII, with a release planned for early 2026. No trailer, no confirmation, just a rumor based on supposed internal documents.

The report also makes no mention of Dragon Quest XII, which was announced back in 2021 and has not been seen since. That silence has only added to the frustration from long-time fans waiting for something new.

Reddit Thinks DQ9 Deserves It Way More

The rumor triggered plenty of discussion over on the Dragon Quest Reddit, where players shared mixed feelings about yet another DQ7 remake. The general vibe is:

  • Why not remake Dragon Quest IX instead?
  • DQ9 is still stuck on DS with no official ports
  • Online features like StreetPass are completely dead now
  • A modern version could fix the grind and make multiplayer work again

Even though DQ7 already got a 3DS version, it was never released on consoles outside Japan. Fans feel that version could still be improved, especially with better visuals and modern quality-of-life updates. However, most players seem to agree it is still a lower priority compared to DQ9 or other titles.

Some players even talked about sticking with Minstrel the entire run and still enjoying the game, especially with emulators like MelonDS and some QoL mods. The love for DQ9 is real, and a lot of fans feel it deserves more than just fan patches and speed-up buttons.

Do We Really Need Another DQ7?

It is worth remembering that DQ VII sold around 4 million copies in Japan, topped the PlayStation charts in 2000, and ranks among the best-selling non-Nintendo games ever in Japan. Its writing is also often called some of the best in the series.

And to be fair, not everyone is against a DQ7 remake. Some fans point out that:

  • The 3DS version never made it to consoles or PC
  • The original PS1 release was extremely slow and grindy
  • Its episodic format could actually work way better today with some smart updates

Still, most players would rather see ports or remakes of other entries first.

What Fans Actually Want Instead

Here is what keeps coming up across the Reddit thread:

  • Remake DQ9, with working multiplayer and less clunky grind
  • Bring the Zenithian Trilogy (DQ4–6) to life in HD-2D
  • Give us a proper console port of DQ8 that keeps both visuals and content
  • And please, localize DQ10 Offline for global audiences

There is also a strong call for making these games easier to access on TV screens, consoles, or PC. Not just handhelds or mobile. Just let people play the series without jumping through hoops.

Still No Word on Dragon Quest XII

As for Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate, fans are still waiting. It has been over four years since the announcement, and there has been almost no real update since. If this DQ7 remake is real, it might actually come out before DQ12 even shows itself again.

Until Square Enix confirms something, treat all this as a rumor – but it has definitely got people talking. If there are any official updates, we will cover them right away.
