Elden Ring: Nightreign is built around fast-paced co-op runs, but that doesn’t mean you have to play with others. No matter if you want to take on the Living Lands alone or team up with friends (or randoms), the system is surprisingly simple. Here’s how multiplayer and solo expeditions work in Nightreign.
How to Start an Expedition
After the opening tutorial, you’ll be taken to the Roundtable Hold, a hub familiar to returning players. Head to the center of the room and interact with the large table to see the “Commence Expedition” prompt.
This brings up the boss selection menu, where you’ll choose your target and read some quick info about them. But before diving in, make sure to check your Matchmaking Settings: this is where you decide how you want to play.
How to Play Solo in Elden Ring Nightreign

If you want to challenge Nightreign on your own, just do the following:
- Go to the Matchmaking Settings tab.
- Change the Expedition Type from “multiplayer” to “single player” down left (see image on top)
- Pick your boss and hit “Commence Expedition.”
That’s it! You’ll go in solo, using the class you currently have equipped. Everything else plays out the same as multiplayer: same bosses, same maps. The only difference? No revives. One death, and it’s over. There is a way to revive one time when solo, but it requires you to go find a Merchant that sells Wending Grace.
How to Play Multiplayer in Elden Ring Nightreign

Multiplayer is the default mode, and it’’ the core experience in Nightreign. To jump into co-op:
- Leave Expedition Type set to multiplayer.
- Select your boss from the list.
- You’ll be automatically matched with two other players.
- Once matched, everyone chooses a class (each class can only be picked once).
- Then you drop into the Living Lands together and get to work.
Even though you’re teamed up, you can explore freely. The map will slowly shrink, so you’ll always meet up by the end. However, we recommend you communicate with your team members and establish some strategies from the start, or you might end up in trouble.
How to Play With Friends
if you want to play with friends, and not with random strangers, there are two easy ways to co-op with friends:
- Invite directly:
- Go to Matchmaking Settings.
- Select “Invite Members.”
- Choose from your online friends.
- Use a Password:
- Set a Multiplayer Password so only players with the same password can join you.
- You can limit how many players join (1, 2, or 3 total).
- Be careful, If you don’t fill all spots, the game will add random players. You can not enter with only two players.
At launch, Nightreign does not support cross-play, so also note that you can only match with others on the same platform. This counts even with the use of a password.
