Hold onto your swords, because Swords of Legends just dropped its first trailer, and this game looks absolutely insane! Developed by Aurogon Shanghai and backed by Tencent, this is a new action-RPG designed for the West and expanding the beloved Gujian universe.

The trailer is live on Bilibili, giving us a first look at the game, and it is really promising. You can also visit their official website and check out the complete Q&A from the developers.

What You Need to Know

  • Genre: Action RPG, semi-linear adventure
  • Difficulty: Not punishing, no Soulslike grind
  • Platforms: PS5, Xbox, PC. No mobile and no F2P
  • Engine: Unreal Engine 5
  • Development: Full develoment started in early 2024, with early research beginning in 2021
  • Release: Still a few years away, but already in mass production

Unlike some previous entries in the Guijan universe, Swords of Legends offers a “wide linear” experience. That means the game guides you along a strong, cinematic story, but you can explore side quests and optional areas at your own pace. There are no tough skill walls or punishing difficulty. The developers want everyone to enjoy the journey!

Step Into the Underworld

In this sequel, you will play as an “Underworld Enforcer“, a unique character who travels between the realms of the living and the dead. Along the way, you will meet a ton of mythological creatures like Ox-Head and Horse-Face. They can serve as companions and even assist in combat with cool combo attacks.

The game’s world is deeply inspired by Chinese mythology and folklore, but each story is standalone. You do not need to have played previous Gujian games to enjoy it. One scene in the trailer shows a woman dancing before bronze bells, trapped between life and death. It already gives a taste of the emotional depth you can expect. You will guide lost souls, helping them resolve past regrets, each with personal, heartfelt backstories.

Combat That Is Fun for Everyone

Swords of Legends is accessible yet strategic. You can capture monster souls and summon them to help out in battle. Some will unlock cooperative combo attacks. You get access to weapon-skill loadouts and exploration items that let you adapt to different enemy types. The developers want combat to feel satisfying and engaging, without punishing less-experienced players.

Even if Swords of Legends is still a few years away from release, the trailer, the Unreal Engine 5 visuals, and the promise of cinematic, accessible combat make it one of the most exciting upcoming RPGs. If this is your type of game, and you like Chinese mythology and unique stories, you should definitely keep this one on your radar.
