Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Is Now Metacritic’s Top-Rated Game by Users!
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has just pulled off something very few games have ever done; it now holds the highest user score on Metacritic, with a 9.8 on PC and 9.7 on PlayStation 5. That is higher than both The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (9.0) and Baldur’s Gate 3 (9.2), two of the most celebrated games in history.
These numbers come from thousands of player reviews, with 97% of them being positive across both platforms.
Steam Peak and Sales Milestone
On top of the review scores, Expedition 33 also hit a new concurrent player peak on Steam last weekend, with 145,063 players online, higher than its launch weekend the week before.

And it is not just being played, it is selling. The game has now taken the #1 spot on Steam’s global top sellers list, even knocking down The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which had been boosted by recent discounts and anniversary hype.

It All Started with Boredom
In a recent BBC interview about Clair Obscur, the game’s director said Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was born simply because he was “bored” of his job at Ubisoft. What makes the story even more impressive: most of the core team had never worked on a game before. Many were junior devs with no prior experience in full game development.
And yet, here they are – with one of the best-rated games on Metacritic ever.
Quick Recap
As of now:
- PC user score: 9.8
- PlayStation 5 user score: 9.7
- Thousands of glowing reviews
- Very few negative or even mixed scores
- Steam player peak: 145,063 (set post-launch)

With reviews still rolling in, we will have to wait and see how long the record holds, but for now, Expedition 33 sits at the top!
