Fallout Season 2 is here, and it’s already dropping some major hints that could shake up the future of the franchise. In a recent interview with the BBC, Todd Howard confirmed that the events of the show will actually affect Fallout 5.
The Fallout 5 Connection

Yes, Fallout 5 is still years away, but now it’s official: the game will exist in a world shaped by the TV show. Howard said, “In short, yes—Fallout 5 will exist in a world where the stories and events of the show happened or are happening. We are taking that into account.”
For some, this might not be shocking. Video game adaptations often spark debate over whether they impact canon. Shows like Halo or Devil May Cry exist in their own separate universe, often ignored by fans when it comes to canon. But The Last of Us, and now Fallout, are taking a different approach, leaving the door open for meaningful tie-ins.
So as Season 2 unfolds, anything major or even minor could influence future games. The show has already teased the return of New Vegas and Shady Sands, hinting that these storylines won’t just be for fun; they’ll matter for Fallout 5.
The Slippery Slope of Adaptations

That said, expanding a game’s universe through TV or film is always tricky. Fallout: New Vegas, for example, had multiple endings based on player choices. Adapting that into a single “official” storyline can feel like it undermines the illusion of choice.
At the time of writing, we don’t yet know how Season 2 ends, but now some crucial questions are being asked. Which ending is canon? Who wins the final Battle of Hoover Dam? Does Mr. House really always come out on top? Clarifying a “true ending” could enhance the story—or alienate diehard fans.
Video game adaptations can be amazing, but they often face fan pushback when they rewrite, misinterpret, or add to the canon in ways that clash with the original games. Ultimately, there’s no way to please everyone—so for now, we wait and see how the chips fall.
