Far Cry Games to Have Greater Multiplayer Focus Says Ubisoft CEO

It’s been four years since Far Cry 6 came out, but the series is by no means dormant. Ubisoft is hard at work on a project titled “Blackbird,” which many assume is Far Cry 7. But another unnanounced project codenamed “Maverick” is also in development, and it may not be a traditional Far Cry game. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemont’s comments this week seem to confirm a new direction the series may take.

A Far Cry Extraction Shooter?

Guillemont spoke at the New Global Sport Conference in Saudi Arabia. “….on Far Cry, it’s really to bring the multiplayer aspects more predominantly pushed, so that it can also be played for a long time by players.” This lines up with rumors that that Maverick is an extraction shooter under the Far Cry brand. Insider Gaming reports the game is set in the Alaskan wilderness. Players will battle wildlife like wolves and bears and deal with harsh weather, all while trying to get their hands on as much loot as possible. Insider also report the Maverick team is working on AI enemy patrols, so it’s likely human enemies will be in the game.

If you think a Far Cry extraction shooter would be a dud in the current gaming market, you’re not alone. Sources inside the studios working on both Blackbird and Maverick expressed skepticism about Far Cry’s direction. Some have even said the games are merely capitalizing on the brand without offering anything unique. It wouldn’t be the first trend-chasing game Ubisoft released to lackluster enthusiasm. Just look at Rainbow Six Extraction, which peaked at 2,338 players on Steam when released in 2023. Still, with Ubisoft stock prices on a downward trend, the company needs a big hit to reverse the damage. Will the next Far Cry game be what the publisher needs? We’ll see.
