Far Cry TV Show Announced by FX

As the years roll on, more and more video games are being adapted for film and TV. The latest—and honestly, one of the more unexpected IPs getting the adaptation treatment is Far Cry. That’s right. Far Cry is getting a TV show. FX has officially greenlit a limited anthology series based on the franchise, with Alien: Earth’s Noah Hawley producing and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s Rob Mac starring and producing alongside him.

A New Far Cry TV Show

A brand-new Far Cry series is officially on the way, headed to Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ internationally. Producers confirmed the show will mirror the games’ standalone structure—each season will feature an entirely new setting with a fresh cast of characters. Whether any of these seasons will closely follow specific games remains a mystery for now.

Hawley touched on the anthology approach, saying, “What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology… To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens, is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”

Rob Mac added, “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created. And through it all, my FX family continues to lift me up with their constant belief and support.”

A Fine Line…

How this series lands is anyone’s guess. Recent video game adaptations have been all over the place. On one end, The Last of Us and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners knocked it out of the park. On the other hand, Halo and Devil May Cry struggled to hit the mark with fans.

But what about Far Cry? The games already play fast and loose with their rules, which means the show has a ton of room to experiment—something that could work heavily in its favor. Will this be another breakout hit or another adaptation that misses the target entirely? We’ll just have to wait and see.
