Final Fantasy Tactics Was Political Before It Was Cool – And It Might Be the Most Relevant FF Game in 2025

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is coming back on September 30, 2025, and yeah, it is launching on pretty much everything: Switch 2, Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

But honestly? From everything we have seen so far, and everything that was officially announced about it, this is not just a remaster. It feels like the perfect time to bring this game back. Tactics has always been one of the most politically loaded, emotionally intense stories in the series, and with where the world is at right now, it will probably hit us harder than ever.

A Story of Resistance, Then and Now

The original Tactics was set against a backdrop of social collapse, and it did not shy away from it. In a new message shared on the official Final Fantasy X/Twitter account, writer and director Yasumi Matsuno explained how the story was born out of Japan’s economic crash, rising inequality, and a generation stuck in survival mode.

It gave us Ramza, a young noble who walks away from privilege to fight a system built on oppression, and Delita, his childhood friend, who uses that same system to climb his way to power.

“It was an era when many were robbed of hope, when dreams were measured by their price tag.”

FF Tactics Message from Yasumi Matsuno

“Now, in 2025—a time when inequality and division are still deeply rooted in our society—I offer this story once again.”

The story of Final Fantasy Tactics is not very subtle; it never was. But it is thoughtful, emotional, and quite sharp in a way that still cuts through, even now.

What Is New in the Remastered Version

Square Enix is updating the game under the new name The Ivalice Chronicles, and the remaster includes more than just a few new HD textures. Here is what we know so far:

  • Two game modes: You can play the original or a new version with fully voiced dialogue
  • Updated visuals: Cleaner graphics that still feel faithful to the original art style
  • Improved UI and modern QoL updates: Better menus, more accessible gameplay, smoother systems

If you loved the original but still want to check out the remaster, you can rest easy – the core story stays untouched. Just keep in mind that Square Enix has not revealed everything yet, so we might still see a few surprises closer to launch.

Never Played Tactics Before?

If you have never played Final Fantasy Tactics or just need a refresher on what the story is actually about, the official FF account also shared a short and really helpful plot summary. It gives a quick overview of the world of Ivalice, the conflict, and the two main characters, Ramza and Delita.

Why It Might Be the Most Relevant Final Fantasy Game Right Now

In a time when more and more games are starting to “say something,” Final Fantasy Tactics stands out for already having done it… nearly 30 years ago.

Final Fantasy Tactics has always been about more than just grid-based battles. It is a story that digs into power, loyalty, and the people caught in between.

With all the talk in the modern world about inequality, institutions, and who really gets to lead or decide the truth, this story about two friends caught in the middle of it all feels less like fantasy and more like a mirror.

So yes, Final Fantasy Tactics is finally coming back. But more than that, it might just be the Final Fantasy game we need most in 2025.
