Game of Thrones: Kingsroad Is Out – But Players Are Split

If you have not heard of it yet, a new Game of Thrones game just launched, and on paper, it sounds like a dream project for fans. Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a free-to-play action RPG set in a massive open-world version of Westeros – and it is now officially available on Steam, Epic Games, Windows, Android, and iOS (Asia coming later in 2025).

It supports cross-play between PC and mobile, and the visuals look impressive (for a ‘mobile game’) thanks to Unreal Engine 5. But despite a big IP, a promising setting, and full co-op support, early reception from the community is… complicated.

What Is Game of Thrones: Kingsroad?

Kingsroad is a story-driven open-world RPG where you play as the illegitimate heir of House Tyre, a noble house from the North. Your goal is to restore your legacy, survive political schemes, and support the Night’s Watch as winter creeps in.

The game mixes real-time ARPG combat with dodge rolls, parries, and manual targeting. You can choose between three classes – Knight, Sellsword, or Assassin – and explore major areas like King’s Landing, Castle Black, and the Stormlands, each packed with lore, side content, and known creatures from the series.

It also supports real-time co-op, so you can team up with friends to fight legendary bosses and earn gear together.

Launch Content and Features

Here is what is included with the global launch (except Asia):

  • Stormlands region has been added, featuring Stannis Baratheon
  • New side content: Beast Hunts, Bandit Camps, Echoes of the Past, and more
  • Level cap increased to 45
  • 4 new Artifacts (1 Legendary, 1 Epic, 2 Uncommon)
  • New Achievements for defeating bosses like Unicorn and Drogon
  • Emote System added to chat
  • Free daily rewards until June 5 via the Web Shop

The devs also shared plans to eventually expand the game to include all of Westeros, depending on long-term popularity.

But What Do Players Think?

That is where things get messy. The game looks great and the lore is strong, but many players are already calling it pay-to-win. The community is also frustrated with clunky combat, awkward UI, and monetization that seems to ramp up quickly after the early levels.

On Reddit and Steam, you will find reviews complimenting the setting and visuals, but also plenty of complaints about grindy progression, bugs, and systems that strongly push you toward spending money to stay competitive or even make real progress.

So far, the audience is split: some say it just needs a few patches, others say it already feels doomed.
