As promised, Ghost of Yōtei took the stage during the July 10 State of Play, and it absolutely delivered. With new story details, deep gameplay systems, and a closer look at combat, Sucker Punch is showing just how ambitious this successor to Ghost of Tsushima truly is.
Here is a full recap of everything that was revealed, and why you should be hyped ahead of its October 2, 2025 release on PS5.
A New Ghost Rises: The Story of Atsu

Set in the untamed wilderness of Ezo (modern-day Hokkaido) in the year 1603, Ghost of Yōtei follows Atsu, a former mercenary who returns home after years of training to get revenge on the hateful gang that destroyed her family: the Six of Yōtei.
From the Serpent to the Dragon, each member of this ruthless clan, including their leader, Lord Saito, will face the wrath of a new Ghost. As Atsu wears the infamous mask and embraces her legend as Onryō, the demon or ghost of revenge, players will uncover her past through a special memory exploration system tied to a single button press.
Combat Evolves – More Weapons, More Strategy

Atsu is not a samurai, she is a survivor, and she fights like one. Players can now switch weapons on the go, including:
- Katana
- Dual Katana
- Kusarigama
- Odachi
- Spear
- Bow
- Rifle
Each weapon has strengths against different enemy types and comes with its own upgrade paths. For instance, the Odachi is ideal for powerful foes, while Twin Blades counter spears effectively.
You will also have access to a versatile ranged arsenal: bows, firearms, kunai, and even flash bombs for a tactical edge.
Enemies can disarm you, so combat requires quick thinking and adaptability. Expect the same cinematic duels from Ghost of Tsushima, now with more depth and flexibility.
Companions, Camps, and Customization

Even in her darkest moments, Atsu won’t walk alone. Players will be able to form bonds with companions, including a wolf companion that can join her in battle or travel. As she rests at campsites beneath the stars of Ezo, Atsu can cook, play the shamisen, or reflect on her journey. These restful moments also serve as hubs where key NPCs, like mentors, traders, and allies, may stop by to offer new weapon techniques or rare gear.
Over time, Atsu will build her own “wolf pack” of trusted allies. A new in-game menu helps track their presence and what they offer. It can be a sensei with new combat skills or a merchant with unique loot. Best of all, you won’t need to return to town: the world and its characters come to you.

Customization remains a core feature. It does not matter if you prefer stealth, long-range precision, or intense close-quarters combat, Ghost of Yōtei lets you mix and match armor, weapons, and perks to suit your playstyle. You will even be able to personalize the look of your gear to make Atsu your own Ghost.
Exploration Gets Deeper and More Personal

Exploration plays a bigger role than ever. The open-world setting surrounding Mount Yōtei offers diverse and dangerous biomes untouched by the central rule of Japan. You can chase the main quest, pursue side stories, or go bounty hunting. You are free to create your own path.
A new clue-tracking system lets you interrogate targets and pick where to go next, making your journey feel more personal and dynamic. You will also find classic immersive features like hot springs, scenic photo spots, minigames, and a cinematic camera to capture every breathtaking moment.
New Game Modes and Homages to Samurai Cinema
Ghost of Yōtei does not just deepen gameplay. It also expands how you experience the world. A more powerful photo mode returns, offering additional tools to help capture Ezo’s haunting beauty. We talk about peaceful campfire moments or intense duels at sunset, there will be countless opportunities to take a break and capture the moment.

Accessibility and immersion are also top priorities. Multiple difficulty options will be available from the start, along with the choice to play entirely in Japanese audio for maximum authenticity.
The beloved Kurosawa Mode from Ghost of Tsushima is back as well: a cinematic black-and-white filter inspired by the legendary filmmaker. But this time, it is joined by two new cinematic game modes:
- Takashi Miike Mode: Inspired by 13 Assassins, this brings the camera closer and adds more blood and grit for a rawer feel.
- Shinichirō Watanabe Mode: In collaboration with the Samurai Champloo creator, this mode introduces lo-fi music that blends seamlessly with combat and exploration, adding a stylish modern twist to the samurai tale.
Ghost of Yōtei is not just a sequel: it is a bold evolution of the samurai open-world genre. With its rich atmosphere, deep customization, and love for cinematic storytelling, Sucker Punch might just deliver another PlayStation classic!
