God of War Amazon Series: Everything We Know So Far

It has been over two years since the announcement of a live-action series based on God of War for Prime Video, and Ronald D. Moore is now sharing the first details of what fans can expect.

Best known for his iconic work on Battlestar Galactica, as well as Outlander and For All Mankind, Moore expressed his admiration for the extensive detail and world-building in the God of War franchise, crediting game director Cory Barlog for his contributions.

Although the God of War adaptation is still in the early stages of development, Moore provided some insights during an interview at San Diego Comic-Con 2025 with Collider’s Steven Weintraub. One of the key revelations from the interview was that the series will not be a scene-by-scene remake of the 2018 game. However, Moore promised that it would remain close to the original source material.

“This world and this universe are really rich, and it’s interesting, and it’s really been fun to adapt. It’s an adaptation, so it’s an adaptation-slash-interpretation as you go into live-action, and it’s been really fun to sort of go, ‘Wow, there’s a lot here we can play with. Okay, we want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it.’ There’s all this stuff that you can keep turning to for inspiration. It’s really been interesting.”

Will The ‘God of War’ TV Show Cover the Greek Saga?

In a recent interview with IGN’s Scott Collura, Moore answered a question about whether the show would explore Kratos’s past or highlight moments from the Greek Saga. He said, “Well, maybe you will just have to wait and see…”

This response sparked speculation among fans about how much the God of War series will draw from the original saga. Will we see only the same glimpses showcased back in 2018, or will the series include scenes from other games that delve into Kratos’s heavy and brutal past, such as Ghost of Sparta?

How Many Seasons of ‘God of War’ Will We Get?

God of War has two seasons greenlit, even though it is still in the early stages of production. Season 1 will feature 10 episodes; however, the length of each episode has yet to be announced.

For those wanting to know some of the biggest takeaways from the recent interviews:

  • Season 1 consists of 10 episodes, with two additional seasons already greenlit.
  • The scripts are currently being processed and written.
  • Filming is expected to begin as early as 2026.
  • The show will adapt the Norse-era games and focus on the characters Kratos and Atreus.
  • Its tone aims to emulate that of the game.
  • Game director Cory Barlog is actively involved in the writing and overall production process.
