While coming off the heels of the brand-new Python Commandos Warbond, Helldivers 2 fans are already getting more updates. This time, it’s about the upcoming Helldivers movie adaptation. Justin Lin, the mind behind the Fast & Furious films, is set to direct the new movie, while Gary Dauberman—the writer behind It and Annabelle—is writing the script for the Sony Pictures/PlayStation Productions project.
The Upcoming Helldivers Movie

According to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter, Lin and Dauberman are deep into bringing Helldivers to the big screen. Helldivers 2 sold over 12 million copies across PC and PS5 back in 2024, and the fanbase has only continued to explode with each update. This includes the Halo crossover and the Xbox launch. With that kind of momentum in such a short time, it’s no surprise Sony wants to keep the ball rolling. That includes expanding into movies.
However, Lin has openly said he isn’t a gamer, but he actually uses that as a strength when pitching his take on the franchise. He wants to ground the story in character and find the humanity within the chaos. Sure, that sounds like a pretty standard movie pitch—but Helldivers is a universe where the individual almost never matters. Super Earth throws Helldivers into warzones by the thousands; only a fraction makes it back. The rest are either cycling through cryo or waiting for deployment again. That’s the charm of the franchise.
So focusing on a small cast of characters could be interesting—not just in terms of who they are, but how long they actually last. And honestly, if anyone can bring explosive, over-the-top energy to Helldivers, it’s the guy who turned Fast & Furious into a global mega-franchise.
For Super Earth

If the Helldivers movies really want to set themselves apart from Starship Troopers, it might be best to have all enemy factions present and not just the Terminids. Because if only the bugs are present, both films might feel a little too similar.
An example could be how Vermintide and Darktide’s threats both heavily involve only one Chaos God, aka Nurgle, despite there being four Chaos Gods and other threats in the universe. We love Nurgle, but there are plenty of other threats that can be introduced. Without variety, elements can become repetitive if done incorrectly.
So, is there enough material to make Helldivers stand out while keeping its tongue-in-cheek, militaristic satire intact? Some fans think absolutely. Others worry it may land a little too close to Starship Troopers. Only time will tell.
