Guerrilla and NCSoft have finally revealed Horizon: Steel Frontiers, an MMORPG set in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. The project is being developed by NCSoft, the team behind Guild Wars 2 and Lineage, in close partnership with Guerrilla Games who created the original Horizon games.

The game will be set in a new region called the Deathlands, inspired by Arizona and New Mexico. Similar to the main games, you will have to fight to survive inside a deadly area filled with rival tribes and dangerous machines.

Mobile Machine Hunters

Steel Frontiers is described as being “designed specifically for mobile,” but it will also be playable on PC. Players will create their own custom hunter, join thousands of others online, and take part in large-scale raids or tribal battles for territory and resources.

According to the reveal, combat will feature new mechanics, including the ability to pick up weapons dropped by machines and carry them on mounts for later fights.

Expanding the Horizon Universe

Previous Horizon titles were massive solo adventures, with a focus on story and exploration. Steel Frontiers turns the experience into a social MMO world. You will team up with other players to hunt mechanical beasts, gather materials, and more. It is time to become the best hunter in the area!

Chase opportunity, face the machines, and carve your legend on the frontier,” teases the official announcement.

No release date has been announced yet. This will be the first-ever Horizon MMORPG, and the series’ first title designed for mobile platforms.

A lot of players are disappointed that the originally PlayStation-exclusive series will not have its MMO start on consoles. Many are hoping NCSoft will eventually bring Horizon: Steel Frontiers to PlayStation, as it feels like a massive missed opportunity. Others are also worried the game could include too many microtransactions, since it is mainly designed for mobile.

Guess we will have to wait and see if Steel Frontiers can live up to the Horizon name! And prove that hunting machines is just as fun with friends!
