How a Superhero Workplace Comedy Climbed Steam’s Charts

Dispatch has just skyrocketed to the top 10 of Steam’s best-seller list, and the reaction from players has been overwhelming. Developed by AdHoc Studio, which is the team behind Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us, Dispatch is an episodic, choice-driven superhero workplace comedy where your decisions affect both the story and the city’s heroes.

The studio celebrated the milestone via a statement on social media:

What Kind of Game is Dispatch?

You play as Robert Robertson, AKA Mecha Man, whose mech suit is destroyed in a battle with a supervillain nemesis. Left powerless, Robert takes a job as a dispatcher for a superhero security company in modern-day Los Angeles.

Instead of fighting crime, you now manage a team of ex-supervillains, assigning them to emergencies around the city, and at the same time, navigating office politics, team problems, and your own quest for revenge.

The game mixes narrative, strategy, and humor. Using a strategy map, you decide who you send to each emergency, and your choices have consequences. Send the stealthy ex-assassin to a high-profile robbery or the popstar with light powers to escort a celebrity? Each choice affects relationships, heroes, and the story.

Episodes 1 and 2 are already available, with the next two launching on October 29, followed by episodes 5-6 on November 5, and 7-8 on November 12, keeping you hyped week after week!

What Makes Dispatch Stand Out

Part of Dispatch’s appeal is its new take on the superhero genre. Instead of focusing on traditional heroes doing hero stuff, it focuses on a simple office job and misfit personalities. Everyone seems to love the writing, animation, and voice cast as well, which includes Aaron Paul, Laura Bailey, Jeffrey Wright, and Travis Willingham.

The choice-driven gameplay also reminds players of Telltale games, but this time set in a modern superhero world. A few players mention limited interactivity in the first two episodes, but most agree the writing and presentation more than make up for it.

Dispatch proves that you do not need a cape to be a hero. Sometimes the biggest choices happen behind a desk, and that is exactly what makes this game work. With more episodes on the way, this story is just getting started.
