Four years after the Mortal Kombat movie reboot, the brutal fighting franchise is finally getting a follow-up. The official red band trailer for Mortal Kombat II hit YouTube this week, teasing a theatrical and IMAX release of October 24th.
The trailer focuses heavily on fan-favorite character Johnny Cage, a notable absence in the 2021 film. Karl Urban, known for his roles in Dredd and The Boys, will be donning the shades of the egomaniac actor.
Cole Young Takes a Backseat This Time
From the looks of it, Cage is stepping up as new lead this time around. Less focus is on Cole Young, created to serve as protagonist of the first movie. The film-original character received a lukewarm reception from fans on release, possibly contributing to the film’s 6.1 score on IMDB. Giving Cage the spotlight will no doubt boost fan hype for the sequel, especially when played by a well-liked actor like Urban.
New Faces, Similar Fatalities
Still what Cole Young fans are out there won’t be too let down. The descendant of Scorpion appears in the trailer, meaning he will still have a role to play in the film. Beyond that, new characters to the films will make an appearance, such as Kitana, Baraka, and Noob Saibot. Even Kano is back — despite, uh, being very dead inthe first one (spoilers BTW). With a bigger cast and more iconic characters, the sequel is sure to make for a bloody good time.
