Crystal Dynamics came to The Game Awards with not one, but two huge Tomb Raider announcements! A new mainline entry and a full reimagining of Lara’s 1996 debut game. The studio confirmed Tomb Raider: Catalyst for 2027 and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis for 2026, just in time for the franchise’s 30th anniversary.
Tomb Raider: Catalyst – Lara’s “Biggest Adventure Yet“
The next major Tomb Raider game, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, puts Lara Croft in the middle of a mythical disaster that has awakened ancient guardian forces. Set across Northern India, the game follows Lara as rival treasure hunters take on the region, forcing her into a race to uncover the truth beneath a fractured landscape.
Crystal Dynamics describes Catalyst as:
- The largest Tomb Raider world ever built, powered by Unreal Engine 5
- A “vertically rich platforming playground” with mountains, deserts, jungles, and myth-shrouded ruins
- A seamless mix of climbing, traversal, puzzle-solving, combat, and exploration
- A story about choosing allies and rivals wisely as ancient power collides with the modern world
Lara once again will be performed by Alix Wilton Regan, returning as the iconic dual-pistol adventurer. This game will release in 2027!
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis – A Reimagined 1996 Classic
Releasing in 2026, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is a full UE5 reimagining of Lara’s original 1996 adventure, co-developed with Flying Wild Hog.
Designed as a modern revival of the series’ roots, Legacy of Atlantis revisits the franchise’s most iconic locations:
- Peru
- Ancient Greece
- Egypt
- and a mysterious Mediterranean island.
Players will once again hunt for the pieces of the Scion, explore deadly tombs, solve intricate traps, and confront dangerous wildlife, but this time with modern controls, new level design, surprises, and cinematics.
Crystal Dynamics says the remake will stay faithful to the tone and atmosphere of Lara’s debut but made with today’s standards.
Two Games, One Unified Lara
Both titles feature the confident, seasoned Lara Croft portrayed by Alix Wilton Regan. Crystal Dynamics describes these games as accessible for newcomers and also delivering the depth long-time fans expect.
Studio Creative Director Noah Hughes added that “adventure-fueled experiences that entertain, inspire, and empower” still guide the franchise, and that what they have shown “barely scratches the surface.”
