Lightning Returns! Did Square Enix Tease a Final Fantasy XIII Remaster?

The official Final Fantasy Instagram account has revived the Final Fantasy XIII community after posting an image of Lightning, the iconic main character of the game, alongside one of her famous quote:

It’s not a question of can or can’t. There are some things in life you just do.”

For many fans, this felt like a hint at something bigger! Perhaps even the long-requested remaster of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy!

Why the Hype?

The Final Fantasy XIII trilogy (XIII, XIII-2, Lightning Returns) remains one of the only modern FF series without a proper remaster. The only consoles they were available on is the PS3 and XBOX 360. On PC, the games are available via Steam. However, performance is notoriously bad, especially for XIII-2 that crashes often, even on high-end PCs. A remastered collection with optimization would solve one of the biggest frustrations for FFXIII players.

Despite a lot of backlash at launch, the trilogy still has a dedicated fanbase. A lot of players loved its characters, battle system, and soundtrack.

A full remake seems unlikely, but a proper remaster with better PC optimization and ports to current-gen consoles would be a welcome addition.

Community Reactions

Not everyone seemed convinced! Many pointed out Square Enix’s history of posting random teasers or nostalgia bait without real projects behind them. People also mentioned Square Enix’s habit of posting anniversary art, merch promotions, or quotes that do not tie to new game announcements.

On the other side, some argue that the timing, just ahead of Gamescom 2025, makes it possible that Square Enix could reveal something bigger. A remaster would bring XIII to modern consoles and fix its PC problems, giving Lightning a proper return!

Remake or Remaster

In the Reddit thread, many players went over the current Final Fantasy games in general, and the remakes or remasters that already happened:

  • FFVII Remake vs Original – Some players still feel upset by Square Enix’s reimagining approach, that is very different from the PS1 game. This makes them skeptical about any other “remake” talk.
  • Other FF Remakes Rumors – Many continue hoping for an FFIX remake after repeated teases and the Nvidia leak. Others would rather see FFVI or FFVIII remastered before XIII.

One thing is sure, the fandom is split! Some say they would buy a XIII remaster day one, and others continue to think that the trilogy is one of the weakest FF sagas.

At the moment, nothing is confirmed. The Instagram post could be a simple nostalgia post. With Gamescom 2025 around the corner, we will not have to wait long to see if Square Enix has real plans for Lightning’s return, or if this was just another case of wishful thinking.
