No, you’re not supposed to ride the sandworms in Dune: Awakening. Really. Funcom’s creative director Joel Bylos confirmed last year that the devs looked into it, but ultimately decided it was too technically tricky and didn’t serve much purpose in-game.
But players thought otherwise!
Because one mad genius named SgtDolphin took one look at that design limitation and said, “Challenge accepted.” In a video he shared on Reddit, SgtDolphin pulls off what can only be described as an unauthorized Arrakis rodeo.

How to Ride the Worm
Armed with a Bindu Sprint (basically a space ninja speed boost from the Bene Gesserit class), a Full Suspensor Belt, and the Emperor’s Wings (for a touch of floaty finesse), you can launch yourself across the desert. Of course, you first need to lure a colossal sandworm out of hiding, then leap directly onto its back, and ride it.
Let’s be clear:
- You can’t steer it.
- You can’t really stay on it.
- You will probably die.
But for a few glorious seconds, you are one with the worm.
Will Wormriding Ever Be a Real Feature?
Maybe. Funcom did consider it once, so it can always end up being a feature, but don’t keep your hopes up too much. Until then, if you’re bold, fast, and totally fine with the occasional violent death? You absolutely can ride the worm.
Just don’t expect it to take you to Arrakeen.
