Loulan: The Cursed Sand Looks Too Good for a 16-Person Team

A new action RPG has just appeared on the horizon, Loulan: The Cursed Sand, developed and published by ChillyRoom. Supported by the PlayStation China Hero Project, this mysterious adventure takes players deep into the lost kingdom of Loulan!

The first trailer just dropped, and you can watch it here:

A Tale Born From Ancient Legends

Set in the Western Regions of ancient China, along the legendary Silk Road, Loulan: The Cursed Sand lets you play as a skeletal warrior known only as the Cursed Sand. Despite being a cursed skeleton, you are still determined to go through forgotten ruins and endless dunes in order to find your beloved princess. And maybe you will also uncover the fate of Loulan, a fallen kingdom swallowed by time.

The premise alone already gives the game a mysterious, melancholic tone, halfway between myth and dark fantasy.

Two Forms

ChillyRoom’s goal is to make a game with arcade-inspired combat mixed with modern ARPG elements. You will unlock unique sand-based powers, solve environmental puzzles, experiment with combat styles, and take on huge bosses that guard the secrets of Loulan.

In battle, you can swap between two different forms:

  • Sand – Wield the surrounding sand to solve puzzles, fight, or explore.
  • Bone – More brutal, close-ranged mode, made to handle massive groups of enemies.

A Small Team With Big Talent

The most surprising part is that the game is being developed by just 16 people! However, several members previously worked at bigger studios such as Santa Monica Studio, FromSoftware, and PlatinumGames. The mix of experiences already shows in the trailer, and we can’t wait to learn more about the game!

ChillyRoom wants to capture both the heart of fast-paced action and the soul of narrative-driven RPGs.

Loulan: The Cursed Sand has no release window yet, but it is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, and you can already wishlist it.
