Mafia: The Old Country Has Full Offline Mode and No Cash Shop

Mafia: The Old Country Combat

With less than a week to go, 2K just shared a full breakdown of what to expect at launch for Mafia: The Old Country. The post covers accessibility, gameplay systems, and a few important details that we, the fans, have been waiting for, such as whether or not the game has a cash shop (it does not), and how offline support will work.

Here is a quick look at what to expect.

Offline Play Is Supported After First Launch

You will need to be online the first time you launch the game. But after that, it is fully playable offline, unless you make major hardware changes or there is a game update that modifies core files. So, for story-focused players, no constant internet required.

No Microtransactions at All

There is no cash shop, no premium currency, and no way to buy in-game items with real money. Mafia: The Old Country uses Dinari, which is earned through gameplay and used to buy:

  • Outfits, weapons, vehicles, horses
  • Alternate styles for gear and vehicles

Dinari is not purchasable with real money, and there is no battle pass either.

Accessibility and Settings

The game will include a wide range of accessibility settings right from launch, including:

  • Fully remappable keyboard controls (PC)
  • Adjustable HUD scaling and subtitle settings
  • Colorblind modes
  • Simplified struggle inputs (auto complete)
  • Sprint toggle (hold or press)
  • Cover stance toggle (classic or persistent crouch)
  • Camera and FOV settings
  • Customizable aim assist and driving simulation

You will also be able to toggle options like skipping long drives, persistent navigation signage, and view distance.

Difficulty Options

Three core difficulty levels will be available:

  • Easy: Enemies are less accurate, weapons hit harder, vehicles take less damage, and loot is more generous.
  • Medium: Standard balance for weapons, AI, and resources.
  • Hard: Enemies are deadlier, loot is scarcer, and vehicles behave more realistically with higher collision damage.

Explore Mode and Collectibles

The game is mostly story-driven and linear, but you will unlock Explore Mode after the prologue. That lets you:

  • Roam freely across Sicily
  • Hunt for collectibles (notes, charms, photographs, etc.)
  • Spend Dinari on outfits, weapons, and vehicles

Explore Mode will also be expanded in a future (free) update post-launch. And, as mentioned in the points above, there are also a bunch of collectibles (including a secret one they are teasing) that offer small perks like equippable charms.

Stealth and Knife Combat

Stealth is a fully supported playstyle, with certain missions even requiring it. However, outside of a few missions, stealth remains mostly optional. Knife mechanics include three types:

  • Scannaturi: Throwable, but low durability
  • Rasolu: High lethality in combat
  • Stiletto: Durable and reliable

Only one can be carried at a time, and Knives degrade with use (e.g., stealth kills or lockpicking), but durability can be restored using whetstones. DLC knives offer unique perks and unlock early in the campaign.

No Dedicated Photo Mode, But There Are Photos

Enzo’s antique camera plays a small role in the story, but the game does not include a full Photo Mode at launch.

Mafia: The Old Country releases August 8 and is available to pre-order now on Steam. More info is expected over the next few days as we get closer to release.
