Metroid Prime 4 Locks Bike Music Behind Amiibo

Metroid Prime 4's Amiibo's unlock content for the game.

With 18 years having passed since Metroid Prime 3: Corruption released for the Wii, it’s fair to say Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has been highly anticipated. But in the wake of the fourth entry’s launch, reaction hasn’t been entirely positive. The game currently sits at an 80 on Metacritic, respectable, but also the lowest score in the Prime series (excluding Federation Force and the pinball game, of course). Common complaints include the emptiness of the central hub, underdeveloped puzzles, and NPCs that are…overly chatty. But one issue has some fans asking if Nintendo has gone too far.

Want Music? Pay Up.

One of the central elements of Beyond is the desert, which serves as a central hub for travel between the game’s zones. Ordinarily the area is dead silent, which some players say makes riding across it rather dull. Fortunately, you can play music in the area if you want. Unfortunately, you need to buy an Amiibo to do so.

The Samus Amiibo for Beyond is the one that does it. On western retailers like the Nintendo US site and Gamestop, the figurine’s description merely says, “Details about functionality within the Metroid Prime™ 4: Beyond game will be announced at a later date.” However, on the Nintendo’s Japanese site, it states, “You will be able to change the background music when riding a viola in [the desert].” It’s important to note, there is no music for specifically for the desert. The Amiibo specifically allows you to select other tracks from the game’s OST to play on your motorcycle.

Some users across the web have also clarified that the ability to switch tracks isn’t exclusive to the Amiibo. Players can also unlock the ability if they obtain 100% exploration completion. Several other features unlocked at max completion are also available early with other Amiibos. While it’s good that Nintendo isn’t locking content behind figurines, it’s hard to deny the desert sections of Beyond would be improved with music. Will such a feature be added later? We’ll have to wait and see.
