More Final Fantasy Tactics Games Depend on Ivalice Chronicles’ Success

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles could get more sequels if it succeeds, according to game director Kazutoyo Maehiro in an interview with Inverse.

“If The Ivalice Chronicles can do well, that’s good for the fans, they can enjoy it. But, at the same time, it shows the business viability of the strategy RPG genre.”

The Tale of Ivalice Spans Multiple Games

The Final Fantasy Tactics games, alongside Final Fantasy XII, take place in the magical realm of Ivalice. While locations and names may differ in each title, the Ivalice games each have things in common with one another. Between high-stakes politicking, races like the Viera and the Bangaa, and characters of various backgrounds, the Ivalice saga is a memorable part of the franchise. Although FFXII (and soon Tactics) have since been ported to modern platforms, FF Tactics Advance and its sequel have not.

“So that could potentially open the door for doing something with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well.”

Ivalice also appeared in Final Fantasy XIV, in Stormblood’s Return to Ivalice alliance raid series. The raid’s story was written by FF Tactics’ original director, Yasumi Matsuno. Matsuno also wrote the “Save The Queen” relic weapon story in Shadowbringers, which took players to the war-torn Bozja region. Both of Matsuno’s contributions to bringing Ivalice to Etheirys can still be experienced by players.

The Future Is Success-Dependent

The development of FF Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles was not an easy task. The source code of the original PlayStation release was lost, leaving Square Enix to rely on other means to remake the game. Having worked with the Ivalice setting before, Square Enix’s Creative Studio 3 stepped up to the challenge.

With Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake proving successful, FF Tactics hopes to capitalize on both nostalgia and newcomers alike. Fans will not have long to experience Ivalician politics and witness The War of the Lions, as The Ivalice Chronicles launches September 30.
