In an unexpected but not unwelcome update, Obsidian announced that The Outer Worlds 2 would release at a launch price of $69.99, down from $79.99.
The initial $80 price tag generated backlash when it was revealed during the June 8th Xbox Games Showcase. Since then, Xbox has gotten into more hot water following mass layoffs and studio closures in early July. With all the bad press, a price drop on one of the Xbox-owned studios’ premiere games serves as a small PR win.
Refunds on Each Platform
Obsidian explained that all customers who pre-ordered the game would be refunded on the platform they used to purchase it.
- Steam users will be re-charged at the new price, and a refund will be sent to their Steam wallet.
- Battle.net users will have their order cancelled, meaning they’ll need to make a new purchase.
- Xbox players will still have their order processed as is and will receieve a $10 refund within ten days of the game’s launch. And finally,
- PlayStation users will have the difference refunded and sent to their wallet automatically.
Obsidian did warn that it could take several days for the refunds to process, so those who pre-ordered should be patient.
One of Xbox’s Biggest Coming Games
Releasing six years after the first Outer Worlds, Microsoft has put a lot of focus on the follow-up to the sci-fi RPG. During the Xbox Games Showcase in June, the sequel got nearly fifty minutes of stage time!
It’s clear that Obsidian and Microsoft are both aiming to make this game as successful as possible. Will the game smash expectations? Players will find out on October 29.
