Peak Becomes Steam’s Number 1 Game, but What Is It?

If you have opened Steam lately, you’ve probably seen it: PEAK, a climbing-focused co-op survival game, has suddenly taken the top spot on the platform. With over 1 million copies sold and a peak player count of 102,000, this indie surprise is reaching new heights, literally.

But what exactly is PEAK… and why is everyone obsessed with falling?

What Is PEAK?

PEAK is a really unforgiving co-op climbing game where one wrong move can ruin everything. You play as a stranded group of nature scouts on a mysterious island, and your only way to escape is to climb the massive mountain at its center.

You can play solo, but the game is truly amazing when you climb with up to 3 friends! And yes, it supports proximity voice chat. Teamwork is vital: help each other scale ledges, place ropes, and use climbing spikes to carve a safe path upward.

A New Climb Every Day

The mountain changes every 24 hours. Each day brings a new randomly generated island, complete with its own layout, weather conditions, and deadly surprises. You can face the day’s challenge once or retry as many times as you need… if your sanity allows it.

Climb, Survive, and Suffer

PEAK features four deadly biomes, each filled with hazards. You will:

  • Battle low stamina from injuries
  • Eat “questionable food” just to survive
  • Scavenge items like Anti-Rope, marshmallows, and energy drinks
  • Light campfires to recover, or simply to feel a little safer

Every step is dangerous, and every fall can be catastrophic.

Cosmetics, Ghosts, and Scouts

Beyond survival, there is more to explore:

  • You can obtain badges and cosmetics
  • Ghosts of past runs haunt the terrain (yours or others’)
  • Customize your scout and show off your style… if you live long enough

Why PEAK Is Blowing Up

  • It launched with a low price (~€7), perfect for curious players
  • It is extremely streamable and TikTok-friendly: chaotic team moments and devastating falls are good content creation material
  • It’s a rare mix of challenge and charm, kind of like Getting Over It meets Don’t Starve
  • Built originally in just 4 weeks, it proves that sometimes, a simple concept done right is all you need

PEAK is more than just a meme game. It’s a tough, weirdly emotional co-op experience. It does not matter if you’re throwing ropes for your friends or eating rotten mushrooms by a cliff, every climb tells a story.

So if you think you’re brave enough, grab your rope, gather your crew, and try to make it to the top.

Just don’t look down.
