Early Leak Reveals PlayStation 6 Home & Handheld Specs

It looks like Sony is getting ready for the next generation of gaming with not one, but two new PlayStation 6 devices! And early leaks just gave us a first look at what the specs might be!

According to a report from Moore’s Law Is Dead, shared on Reddit, the upcoming PlayStation 6 consoles will include a powerful home console called “Orion” and a portable handheld device named “Canis.”

You can take a look at the original post here:

PlayStation “Orion” – The Next-Gen Home Console

“Orion” is only the current codename, but this looks to be the successor to the PS5. Sadly, the PS5 was not the biggest PlayStation generation.

A lot of players are calling it the “sacrificed gen”. Part of the reason was the lack of original games, and the rough start with the console being almost unavailable at its launch! And it seems that in a couple of years, the next PlayStation will take its place!

Here is what to expect from Orion:

  • Chiplet design, possibly using AMD’s upcoming Navi 5 architecture.
  • Backwards compatibility with both PS5 and PS4 titles.
  • Built with a focus on lower power consumption (160W TBP), even less than the PS5.
  • Estimated to feature 8 Zen 6 CPU cores and 40-48 RDNA 5 compute units running over 3GHz.
  • Uses GDDR7 memory on a 160-bit or 192-bit bus, delivering major bandwidth.
  • Rasterization performance is rumored to be ~3x better than the PS5, with even higher gains in ray tracing.
  • Built on a 3nm process, making it much more efficient than current-gen hardware.
  • Release window: Manufacturing is expected to begin in mid-2027, with a fall 2027 or early 2028 launch likely.

If true, this could mean a big power jump over the current PS5!

PlayStation “Canis” – The Portable PS6 Handheld

And now for something even more surprising! Sony is working on a new handheld! Codenamed “Canis”, it is built to complement the PS6 home console while also standing on its own.

Does this mean we finally get a new Sony handheld? Maybe the true successor of the old PSP. We had the PS Vita in-between, but sadly, this one never truly picked up, and lacked a lot compared to the PSP.

Here is what to expect from Canis:

  • Powered by a monolithic 3nm chip, confirmed in recent internal documents.
  • Also backwards compatible with PS5 and PS4 games.
  • Comes with modern features like:
    • Touchscreen
    • Dual microphones
    • Haptic vibration
    • USB-C with video out
    • MicroSD and M.2 SSD slots for extra storage
  • Packs 4 Zen 6c CPU cores, 12-20 RDNA 5 compute units running at 1.6-2GHz.
  • Uses LPDDR5X RAM on a 128-bit bus, with a power target of just 15W.
  • Leaked performance puts it at about half the power of the PS5, but with stronger ray tracing capabilities.
  • Expected to outperform the upcoming Xbox Ally X, but it won’t be a raw performance beast.

Just like Orion, Canis is also planned for mid-2027 manufacturing, and this means both should release around the same time.

What This Could Mean for PlayStation

Sony seems to go back to two console strategy, similar to what Microsoft is rumored to be doing with its “Magnus” console and other handheld ideas. The PS6 will not just be one massive box under your TV, but a sort of connected system of home and portable gaming.

This also means possible games releasing only on the handheld console, or simply working on both. It would allow players to properly play their games both at home and on the road!

With both “Orion” and “Canis” reportedly using AMD’s latest architecture and 3nm chips, you can expect huge jumps in performance, ray tracing, and energy efficiency. And on top of that, you can still enjoy your PS4 and PS5 libraries on both consoles!

Of course, all this information only comes from leaks, so take it with a grain of salt. Specs and release windows can still change until then! It is still a long wait, but keep an eye on our latest news for all the information!
