A classic is making a comeback, but not quite how you remember it. According to well-known leaker DuskGolem, Capcom’s long-rumored Resident Evil: Code Veronica remake is not only real, but it is also ahead of schedule. The project is reportedly set to launch before the Resident Evil 0 remake, and could arrive as early as 2027.
If true, this would make Code Veronica the next big remake in Capcom’s ongoing revival series following RE2, RE3, and RE4.
What Is Revealed by the Latest Leaks
Here is a look at everything that has been shared so far:
- The Code Veronica remake is ahead of schedule right now, and may release before Resident Evil 0 Remake.
- The target window is around 2027.
- Steve Burnside is still crushing on Claire, but will now be portrayed as more innocent and awkward, instead of the more pervy tone he had in the original game.
- Albert Wesker is said to have a much larger role, with his H.C.F. organization expanded into a bigger part of the plot.
- The iconic Chris vs. Wesker confrontation has been reimagined as a full boss fight, and Wesker no longer fights Alexia.
- Rockfort Island will reportedly become a semi-open world hub, with multiple routes and a ton of areas to explore.
- Early in the story, Claire repairs a motorcycle, and she can then use it to travel between areas of the island.
What Could This Mean for the Remake
If the leaks hold up, Code Veronica might be the biggest gameplay change in the remake series so far. Turning Rockfort Island into a semi-open hub sounds like a move toward more player freedom and exploration, similar to what RE4R did but on a larger scale.
The motorcycle mechanic could make exploration feel less linear and more interconnected, and also still keep the survival-horror part alive, if Capcom pulls it off right.
The Wesker and H.C.F. expansion also makes sense. With how important Wesker became in later games, giving him more presence here could help link Code Veronica more tightly to the rest of the Resident Evil games.
And the Steve rewrite is probably a smart move as well. His original character has not aged well, and giving him a more awkward, relatable vibe could make his character more interesting.
As always, take this with a grain of salt. None of this is officially confirmed by Capcom yet. DuskGolem has a strong track record when it comes to Resident Evil leaks, but things can change during development, or the info could be outdated.
Either way, it looks like Code Veronica fans finally have a reason to get excited again!
