Should the Next Final Fantasy Be Action or Turn-Based?

In a recent interview, Final Fantasy VII Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that the gameplay direction of the next mainline Final Fantasy is not pre-determined for now. It will depend entirely on the director in charge if it ends up being an action or turn-based game.

For the Final Fantasy numbered series, the game design is based on the director’s decision. For the new title, whether it’s action or turn-based, that’s not pre-determined yet,” Hamaguchi said.

He added that, of course, fan reception also plays a major role in those decisions. Following all the positive responses to Expedition 33 and the general feeling that “JRPGs are back,” Hamaguchi said his next project, whatever it may be, will focus much more on what game experience fans will enjoy. So if the general feeling is that JRPGs are not so bad after all, he may lean more into a turn-based style game. However, this might not be any Final Fantasy game, and could be something entirely new and original!

For now, it is unknown if that means Final Fantasy XVII could return to its classic turn-based roots or continue evolving as an action RPG. It is clear that Square Enix is not locking itself into one formula just yet, and a lot of players are happy to hear that!

Why It Is Important

After Final Fantasy XVI went fully action-based, players have been divided over the series, wondering if it should return to its turn-based origins.

Hamaguchi’s comments suggest that future entries could change direction again, meaning Final Fantasy XVII might bring back classic strategic combat, or push even more into fast-paced action depending on what fans respond to most.
