Aeternum Game Studios has announced that Aeterna Lucis, the sequel to Aeterna Noctis, will now release in 2026 instead of this September!
The developers explained the delay is partly due to the long-awaited reveal of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Competing with such a highly anticipated release, they said, would rob their game of the visibility it deserves. Instead, they want to make sure players can enjoy Aeterna Lucis under the best possible conditions.
Beyond timing, the studio admitted they still lack some next-gen development kits for a simultaneous launch across all platforms. The extra time will allow them to refine the game, polish every detail, and deliver what they hope will be the “perfect experience” for everyone.
What Is Aeterna Lucis?
For those unfamiliar, Aeterna Lucis is the follow-up to Aeterna Noctis. Much like the previous game, it is a Metroidvania with fast-paced combat, an interconnected world, a ton of secrets to uncover, optional challenges, and a nice story. The first game was challenging but rewarding, and Lucis will most likely be very similar.
No Rivalry, Only Gratitude
Instead of calling Silksong a competition, Aeternum Game Studios expressed admiration for Team Cherry, calling them a major inspiration:
“Instead of rivalry, what we feel is gratitude: thanks to them, the metroidvania genre is more alive than ever and, in fact, they were one of the main inspirations that led us to create Aeterna Noctis and the entire saga now in development.”
The studio also pointed out that the game itself is already finished, and this extra time is about polish and making sure the launch lives up to community expectations. It will only release in 2026, but the developers will make sure the wait was worth it!
