Take-Two Confirms GTA 6 Entered Full Development in 2020

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia - Vice City

Take-Two just confirmed that GTA VI officially entered full production back in 2020, shortly after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2. According to a recent report shared by IGN, that is when Rockstar Games started working on the game “in earnest.”

That said, concept work reportedly started as early as 2014, which means the total development time could hit around 8 years by the time the game launches in May 2026.

Over $1 Billion Budget?

Multiple sources, including past leaks, suggest that GTA 6’s development cost alone may exceed $1 billion, with the full budget (including marketing and post-launch content) possibly hitting $1.5–2 billion. That would easily make it the most expensive game ever made.

Rockstar and Take-Two clearly see it as worth the cost, calling it their most complex and ambitious title to date.

The Hype Is Real

Take-Two called GTA 6 the “most anticipated entertainment property of all time.”

  • Trailer 1 racked up 93M YouTube views in 24 hours
  • Trailer 2 exploded with over 475M views across platforms, making it the biggest video launch ever

Liberty City Rumors Are Still Circulating

Some fans are still convinced we will see Liberty City in GTA 6 at some point, either at launch or later as DLC. Rockstar has not said anything official, but the theories are picking up again thanks to recent interviews and trailer hints. However, it would make sense if we get this city at some point, especially due to Liberty City being the hometown of Lucia Caminos, one of the two main characters in GTA 6.
