The Blood of Dawnwalker made another appearance during Summer Game Fest, showing off a new trailer and offering us another look at the upcoming vampire RPG from Rebel Wolves. However, it was not the medieval action that got everyone talking.
The trailer started with an unexpected scene set in the modern day, showing protagonist Coen receiving a blood delivery in what appeared to be the present. The moment surprised everyone, and not always in a good way, with many viewers assuming that modern-day sequences would somehow be part of the game itself. Are we going to play Coen in modern times? Is the entire game just some sort of huge flashback scene of Coen retelling his origin story years later?
If you did not see the present part, you can check it out on the official YouTube:
As it turns out, none of the suspicions we had were the case.
The Present Day Is Not Part of Blood of Dawnwalker
Following the Summer Game Fest show, the developers quickly addressed the confusion on social media.
That short message answers one of the biggest questions that we all had after seeing the trailer. No, you will not suddenly find yourself jumping between medieval Europe and modern times during the story. Instead, this scene appears to serve as a teaser for the larger upcoming universe Rebel Wolves hopes to build around the franchise.
So basically, a little teaser of what could be if they make more than one game.
Too Much Spoiler?
The explanation may have cleared things up, but it has not stopped players from wondering if this move was really the right one or not. Some people love the idea that Coen’s story could eventually go far beyond the medieval setting, potentially allowing future games to explore different eras but still following the same vampire protagonist.
Others are less convinced. A few players questioned why the studio would reveal a modern-day teaser before the first game has even launched, and some even argued that showing Coen alive centuries later potentially removes some of the mystery surrounding the upcoming story. It means that no matter what happens in the story now, you know that he will not die.
A few players also admitted they initially thought the trailer was setting up gameplay sections in the modern era, so the clarification was definitely necessary.
For now, Rebel Wolves seems committed to keeping The Blood of Dawnwalker focused entirely on its dark fantasy setting. The modern-day sequence is basically just about where the franchise could eventually go if the first chapter proves successful.
However, it is unknown if that reveal was a really exciting teaser or an unnecessary spoiler…
