The Witcher 3 Could Get a New Expansion in 2026

Almost ten years after its original release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt might not be done yet!

According to multiple trusted industry sources, CD Projekt Red is reportedly working on a new paid story expansion for The Witcher 3, with a possible release window set for 2026. And unlike a small side update, this one could be the size of Blood and Wine rather than a simple quest pack.

Where the Rumor Started

The first claims came in mid-2025 from Polish filmmaker and industry insider Borys Nieśpielak, who stated that Fool’s Theory, the studio currently working on The Witcher 1 Remake, was also developing a new expansion for The Witcher 3.

Nieśpielak later reiterated his claim ahead of The Game Awards 2025, suggesting an announcement was expected there. That reveal never happened, but the rumor did not die.

Analysts Back It Up

Shortly after, Polish Noble Securities analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski supported the claim in a December 16, 2025, report. According to his projections:

  • Release window: May 2026
  • Estimated price: $30
  • Expected sales: 11 million copies
  • Production budget: PLN 52 million

The report also suggested the expansion would act as a marketing bridge toward The Witcher 4, and that game is currently planned for Q4 2027.

CD Projekt Red’s Subtle Hint

Nieśpielak later confirmed via email that his information was verified by multiple independent sources. He also pointed to a recent CD Projekt Red earnings call, where CFO Piotr Nielubowicz stated:

There is a chance that new content hinted upon in recent calls and reports may see release in the coming year.

CDPR officially maintains that it “does not comment on rumor or speculation,” but that line was enough for a lot of people to think that it was indeed happening.

Why Players Would Love a New Witcher 3 Expansion

On paper, the idea actually fits pretty well:

  • It could smoothly bridge The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4, especially if the next saga changes focus to Ciri
  • It would serve as a huge marketing boost ahead of the next mainline entry
  • From a business perspective, The Witcher 3 still sells extremely well, so another high-quality DLC would almost print money

And let’s be honest, CD Projekt Red’s DLC track record is ridiculous. Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine were not just expansions, they felt like entire standalone RPGs.

If there is one studio where “buy the DLC, no questions asked” applies, it is CDPR. The DLCs are usually around 30€, hold multiple hours of quality content from main quest to side stuff, and even new zones, weapons, armors, and more!

It Is Still Only a Rumor

That said, this remains only a rumor for now. Nothing has been officially confirmed, and there are also some genuine reasons to stay cautious.

  • Engine limitations: CDPR has fully moved from REDengine to Unreal Engine 5, but The Witcher 3 still runs on REDengine, so why would they go back to the old engine?
  • Team availability: Fool’s Theory is already juggling The Witcher 1 Remake and support work on The Witcher 4, adding a DLC for Witcher 3 means even more work
  • Time gap: It has been a decade since launch, and much of the original team has moved on
  • Narrative closure: Geralt’s story was very clearly wrapped up with Blood and Wine

There is also the question of priorities, since pulling resources away from The Witcher 4 or Cyberpunk 2 would be a strange long-term move.

If the Expansion Happens, It Will Be Worth Playing

Still, if a third Witcher 3 expansion really is coming, chances are it will not exist “just because.”
It would almost certainly connect directly to the future of the series, possibly introducing what comes next.

And if you somehow still have not played The Witcher 3, this might end up being the perfect moment. Few games age this well, and even fewer get DLCs that feel like full RPGs. Witcher 3 remains one of the best games ever made, and it even still looks and runs better than some more recent RPGs.

If CDPR does one last ride with Geralt, history suggests it will not disappoint! We will definitely keep an eye on the rumors, so stay tuned!
