During Gamescom 2025, Microsoft and ASUS finally confirmed the launch date for their much-anticipated new handhelds, the Xbox ROG Ally and ROG Ally X. Both devices are set to release on October 16, 2025, but there is one big detail missing, and that is: the price.
Price Speculation: Steep or Standard?
Xbox has not officially revealed pricing yet, saying it will be shared “later this year”. However, early leaks and discussions suggest a $549.99 USD price tag for the ROG Ally and $899.99 USD for the ROG Ally X.
If true, that places them higher than the actual Xbox console, and even higher than the Switch 2. This is making many wonder if players will be willing to pay nearly a thousand dollars for a portable Xbox gaming console.
Of course, until prices are revealed officially, this is only speculation, and it might be much cheaper, or…pricier. The reason Asus and Xbox are holding off on revealing the price for now might be a good indication that this is, really, indeed the actual price. However, you will have to wait until October hits before we can confirm or deny this.
Xbox’s New Handheld
The Xbox Ally series represents Microsoft’s biggest push yet into handheld gaming. Partnering with ASUS, the goal is to let players access their full Xbox and PC libraries on the go, all in one device.
They released a video where they go over the console’s goal and features:
Key information you should remember:
- Two Models: Ally (720p) and Ally X (1080p).
- Performance: 30-60 FPS for most games, with support up to 120 FPS.
- VRR (Variable Refresh Rate): Keeps visuals smooth even when frame rates dip.
- Game Labels: Easy-to-read performance tags like “Should perform well” or “Handheld Optimized” so players know what to expect before downloading any game.
- Unified Game Library: Pulls together titles from Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, Ubisoft, Battle.net, EA, and, of course, Xbox.
Hardware Breakdown
- ROG Xbox Ally – AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB RAM, 516GB storage, 60Wh battery.
- ROG Xbox Ally X – AMD Ryzen- AI Z2 Extreme, 24GB RAM, 1TB storage, 80Wh battery, impulse triggers for haptic feedback.
Both models feature ASUS Armoury Crate, allowing players to swap between Silent, Performance, and Turbo modes, as well as change battery life and button remapping.
Gaming Anywhere, Anytime
Beyond specs, Xbox is pushing the “play anywhere” vision hard. Native PC games can be installed directly on the handheld, and Xbox console exclusives are accessible through Cloud Gaming or remote play. A dedicated Handheld Optimized Channel will also highlight games best suited for the device’s screen and controls.
One thing is sure: the tech sounds promising, but the rumored pricing has raised eyebrows. At nearly $900 for the Ally X, it is a significant investment compared to rivals like the Steam Deck or Lenovo Legion Go. Microsoft and ASUS will likely justify the cost with premium features, but if players agree or not remains to be seen.
For now, all eyes are on the official price announcement, which should arrive closer to launch. Until then, gamers are left asking: Is portable Xbox gaming worth the premium price tag?
