Five months after release, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has officially passed 5 million copies sold worldwide, and that is a massive milestone for Sandfall Interactiv’s small team. The developers shared a heartfelt thank-you message to fans, and teased a major free update now in development.
The team also revealed that the game’s beautiful original soundtrack by Lorien Testard has already reached over 333 million track streams, proving once more, that Expedition 33’s world continues to resonate far beyond the game itself.
What Is Coming in the Free Update
To celebrate the milestone, Sandfall confirmed several new features coming soon to all platforms, including:
- A new, playable environment, taking the characters of Expedition 33 to a new location with new enemy encounters and surprises to discover.
- Challenging, new boss battles for late-game players to overcome.
- New costumes for each member of the Expedition, giving even more customization options for players throughout their adventure.
- New text and UI game localizations into Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian, bringing the total number of supported languages to 19.
- And more to come…
The last part definitely hints at even more surprises to come! There are a lot of things to uncover in the game, so plenty of rooms for a ton of exciting additional content!
A Closer Look at the Teaser
Alongside the announcement, Sandfall shared a new image showing what seems to be a child’s playroom. There is a book with a drawing of Esquie and Verso as a kid, where Verso is riding on Esquie’s back. This could mean we might get more information about their backstory or flashbacks to Verso’s childhood.
During the main story, we learn that Esquie was Verso’s childhood “friend,” but we never truly discover what happened in the real world before Expedition 33 begins. This update might actually give us our first look into that missing chapter.
The studio has not confirmed the details, but it is hard to not see the hints in the image. The upcoming area could throw us deeper into the emotional connection between Verso and Esquie, possibly revealing new lore tied to the family herself. On top of that, since we see a book, we might also get more information about the Writers, other Painters, or more!

Sandfall closed their post with a simple but powerful message to players:
“We spent years working on our dream project, and to know it has resonated with fans around the world in such a powerful way is both wonderful and overwhelming. Now we’re really looking forward to bringing you more of what we’re working on.”
The update does not have a release date yet, but hopefully we will not have to wait too long for more Expedition 33 content!
