Square Enix and Team Asano just dropped tons of new info about their upcoming action RPG, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, in their first official interview with producer Naofumi Matsushita and concept lead Tomoya Asano.
If you are interested in reading the complete interview, you can do so on Square Enix’s official website!
For those who are just interested in the main takeaways, here is a recap of what you should remember from the interview!
What Is The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales?

It is Team Asano’s first action RPG using their iconic HD-2D visual style. The game has a single protagonist, Elliot, with help from a controllable fairy companion named Faie. It is set in a beautifully crafted world themed around time, with really satisfying combat, exploration, dungeons, and loot.
The game will also offer accessible controls, but plenty of options for more experienced players.
Action Gameplay Meets Deep Strategy

- You can expect fast-paced combat with seven different weapon types including swords, bows, and bombs.
- Each weapon is useful in different combat situations and even required for puzzle-like exploration.
- The companion fairy, Faie, brings unique skills like Warp (teleport to her position) and Sprint (super-speed dash).
- The game will support local two-player co-op! One player controls Elliot, and the other can control Faie.
Magicite System
- You can collect and melt magicite, which enhances or changes how weapons behave.
- Think custom loadouts! You can combine effects to suit your playstyle and swap builds anytime.
- Some combos offer surprising or overpowered results, rewarding experimentation.
HD-2D, but Reimagined
- The game features a fixed top-down perspective, with a “rolling cylinder” effect that adds depth to the environment.
- The team put extra effort into making enemies, weapons, and Elliot’s pixel model and animations.
- Sprite artist Shizuka Morimoto and character designer Naoki Ikushima collaborated to create a lovable, and really cool look for Elliot.
Team Asano Easter Eggs & Inspirations

- This game draws heavily from previous titles like Bravely Default, Octopath Traveler, and Triangle Strategy.
- For example, because players loved cutting grass in Bravely Default II, you can cut grass here too!
- The project started immediately after Bravely Default II, with developer Claytechworks returning.
Demo & Feedback
The Demo is already out now for Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix is actively collecting feedback through a player survey, just like they did for Octopath Traveler. The game tracks anonymous gameplay data to see where players struggle (offline play is also available).
