Xbox Series X|S Sales Might Be Lower Than We Thought

Is Xbox Series X|S Really Under 30 Million Units Sold?

Currently, a recent post on Reddit is making waves after an AMD insider reportedly said that Xbox Series X|S has still not passed 30 million units sold. Although Microsoft has not shared official numbers in years, this new statement adds quite a bit of fuel to the ongoing debate about where Xbox is heading!

The Reddit thread quickly blew up, with players comparing this gen’s performance to the Xbox One and pointing out how hard it is to even tell which Xbox is the newest. We have all been there: “Wait, which one is the newest Xbox again?”. From Xbox 360 to One to Series… it is easy to see why people are still confused.

Xbox vs PlayStation and Switch

A few readers think that insiders’ numbers are too low. The linked NeoGAF thread (shared within the Reddit post) includes information where analyst “Welfare” estimates Series X|S sales closer to 37 million. But that number includes hardware revenue – things like controllers and other accessories – so the real console count might be a lot lower.

For comparison, PS5 has already passed 75 million, and the Switch keeps selling strong. Xbox just is not in the same race anymore. And with so many big Xbox games also coming to PC, a lot of players are skipping the console entirely.

There is also the issue of price. Series X currently costs $599.99 USD (at Best Buy), while the Series S is around $429.99 (1TB edition). That is more than a PS5 in some regions, and many users say they are just not seeing the value.

What Are Fans Actually Saying?

Nevertheless, there are fans who still stand by the hardware and say the Series X is the best console they have owned. However, the current consensus is that most others feel like Xbox has lost its direction. Game Pass is still a big win for value, but it has not turned the console into a must-buy, especially since you can also get Game Pass for PC.

There is no official word from Microsoft yet, and there probably will not be one soon. Until then, the guessing game around Xbox’s real sales numbers is going to continue.
