Is Retail WoW Coming to an End? Blizzard Addresses That “One Last Time” Comment

BlizzCon 2026 gave us plenty of exciting World of Warcraft announcements, but one particular detail has sent some players spiraling down a long rabbit hole.

During the event, both Holly Longdale and Ion Hazzikostas used some pretty loaded language when talking about the future of WoW. Holly described World of Warcraft: Forever as “your new permanent home”, while Ion said that Azeroth “needs us, one last time.”

Thankfully, before anyone could truly start planning Retail’s funeral, Blizzard has addressed this comment—and the answer is a little less ominous than some players might have expected.

Kubit Says Don’t Read Too Much Into it

Recently, we got the chance to sit down with Associate Game Director Paul Kubit, and Senior Game Designer Kim Flack. Knowing how notoriously careful Ion is with his wording, we asked how much we should read into the “one last time” comment.

The answer? “Not too too much.”

Paul explained that The Last Titan will resolve a huge number of stories with The Worldsoul Saga approaching its conclusion. TLT will bring players into “a new era of storytelling for World of Warcraft.” However, he was also very clear that this doesn’t mean Blizzard is running out of stories to tell. “I would not expect The Last Titan to be finishing up every single little bit of story we have to tell.”

So while Kubit’s comment might provide some reassurance, is it enough to stop the speculation?

With TLT set to conclude The Worldsoul Saga, alongside stories that have been unfolding in Azeroth for more than 20 years, it’s easy to see why players are concerned for Retail’s future. Add in WoW Forever being called a “permanent home”, and there’s definitely enough to get some of us worrying!
