Azerite Traits and Essences, introduced in Battle for Azeroth, need to be chosen correctly, to ensure optimal performance. On this page, we explain how to pick your major and minor essences and which traits are best.

This page is part of our Havoc Demon Hunter PvP Guide.

Azerite Essences for Demon Hunters

Essences allow players to customize their characters while adding a new ability to use. This section will cover the best overall Azerite Essences for Havoc Demon Hunters in PvP.

For a general guide to all the essences, as well as how to obtain them and increase their ranks, check out our Essence guide.

Before reading this page, you should have a good understanding of the PvP playstyle of a Havoc Demon Hunter So we advise you to read our dedicated page on the subject.

Major Essences

The best Major Essence is Breath of the Dying Icon Breath of the Dying. This power will help Demon Hunters with that extra bit of damage to increase their overall sustained damage. Breath of the Dying has the potential to deal a large amount of damage with a very short cooldown.

Minor Essences

In addition to having a Major Essence, you can choose two Minor Essences to place in your neck at Heart of Azeroth Levels 55 and 65.

The best Minor Essence is Memory of Lucid Dreams. It grants you Lucid Dreams Icon Lucid Dreams, which gives your spells and abilities a chance to refund 50% of the Fury spent on them and heals you. This is great for increasing your damage, as you will frequently be refunded Fury throughout a match.

Vision of Perfection Icon Vision of Perfection reduces the cooldown of your primary burst cooldown, Metamorphosis Icon Metamorphosis, and gives you a decent amount of Versatility.

Breath of the Dying Icon Breath of the Dying grants the minor ability Lethal Strikes Icon Lethal Strikes. This will increase your overall damage output and also help with your survivability.

Conflict and Strife Icon Conflict and Strife grants a very powerful Versatility Minor Power. Not only do your spells have a chance to give you Versatility, but any loss of control to your character does too. This means that, if teams stun you and try to swap to you, you have additional Versatility and take less damage.

Azerite Traits for Havoc Demon Hunters

Azerite traits are unlocked in you helm, shoulders and chest. With each Azerite level in your neck, you get closer to unlocking the center trait in your gear. These traits vary from increasing damage of certain abilities to helping increase your survivability. Depending on what traits you use, it can completely alter your playstyle and what talents you should be using.

For more information about Azerite traits and your Heart of Azeroth, please refer to our dedicated guide.

Outer Rings

Below are the best Outer Ring traits.

  1. Furious Gaze Icon Furious Gaze
  2. Chaotic Transformation Icon Chaotic Transformation
  3. Revolving Blades Icon Revolving Blades
  4. Thirsting Blades Icon Thirsting Blades
  5. Eyes of Rage Icon Eyes of Rage

The most important trait you are going to want to get in all pieces of your gear is Revolving Blades Icon Revolving Blades. This gives you additional cleave damage when you use Blade Dance Icon Blade Dance. You should also get at least one Chaotic Transformation Icon Chaotic Transformation. This trait is important for the reset on some of your important abilities. Furious Gaze Icon Furious Gaze, Eyes of Rage Icon Eyes of Rage, and Thirsting Blades Icon Thirsting Blades all increase your sustained damage and are all solid traits for a damage increase.

  2. Elemental Whirl Icon Elemental Whirl
  3. Azerite Veins Icon Azerite Veins
  4. Gutripper Icon Gutripper

The Middle and Inner Rings are important for additional defensives and damage. Havoc Demon Hunters are very weak when they are put into stuns. However, you will want to focus on increasing your damage with traits like Azerite Globules Icon Azerite Globules and Elemental Whirl Icon Elemental Whirl.

Inner Ring

Below are the best Inner Ring traits.

  1. Resounding Protection Icon Resounding Protection
  2. Burning Soul Icon Burning Soul
