General Information

On this page, you will learn what the best corruptions and the best corrupted items are for a Marksmanship Hunter in World of Warcraft — Battle for Azeroth (BfA) 8.3. We also tell you how to handle corruption effects.

Corruption is a new Patch 8.3 feature (see our guide on Corrupted Items). It replaces Warforging and Titanforging for all gear in the patch. It gives items a type of affix, as well as an amount of Corruption. Corruption is a stat that negatively impacts your character the more of it that you have, but the more Corruption you have, the more powerful the affixes will be. Some Affixes are a lot more powerful than others, and you can see a guideline ranking for them below.

What Corruption Powers to buy on a Marksmanship Hunter

Echoes of Ny'alotha can now be used to buy specific Corruption powers from MOTHER, in the Chamber of the Heart in Silithus.

This allows you to optimize the Corruptions on your gear without any RNG involved, as long as you have enough Echoes to buy the Corruptions you need.

You can learn all about this new system in our specialized guide for Echoes of Ny'alotha below.

For Marksmanship Hunter we recommend that you focus on Expedient Icon Expedient Corruptions almost exclusively. You should apply these Corruptions to items that you are unlikely to ever replace. For this, our Gearing Section is a good start, as it offers a list of Best in Slot items. Raidbots offers a powerful tool that lets you simulate the best items and Corruptions to add to your gear as well, which can be helpful.

If you have nothing that is worth adding Corruption to here and now, you should still consider buying the Corruption consumables for good Corruptions like Expedient, Ineffable Truth, and Gushing Wound. You never know when those Corruptions may be available on the vendor again.

You should still be mindful of how many Echoes of Ny'alotha you have, however. Generally speaking, if you do most of the content available, you will not be limited by the Echoes that you have. It is good practice to always have 5000 at some point each week, or ideally twice a week. This ensures you can always buy one of the best Corruptions when they come up, even if you are just storing them for the time being.

Best Corruptions for Marksmanship Hunter

We have provided simulations below for all the different Corruptions, but we still feel the need to explain why some Corruptions are good and so on, as simulations rarely tell the full story.

S Tier Corruptions

Expedient Icon Expedient increases the Haste you gain from all sources and is generally the best Corruption for Marksmanship Hunters.

A Tier Corruptions

Severe Icon Severe increases the Critical Strike you gain from all sources. Marksmanship Hunters are not particularly fond of Crit and tend to avoid it when they can, so it is not a particularly good Corruption. This evaluation assumes that you have at least 2x Unerring Vision Icon Unerring Visions on your gear. Without this, Severe is C-tier at best.

Infinite Stars Icon Infinite Stars can be S Tier on pure single-target encounters where you are only fighting a single meaningful target for the whole fight. If any AoE or multiple targets are introduced, it quickly loses value, however.

Honed Mind Icon Honed Mind is a simple occasional Mastery proc. Mastery is a decent stat for Marksmanship making this a good Corruption.

B Tier Corruptions

Strikethrough Icon Strikethrough increases your Critical Strike damage, which combines well with Unerring Vision Icon Unerring Vision Azerite Traits and the Severe Icon Severe Corruption.

Twisted Appendage Icon Twisted Appendage is a random damage proc that spawns a Mind Flay tentacle that deals damage for you. Its weakness is that it is purely a single-target proc.

Ineffable Truth Icon Ineffable Truth Rank 1 is a 10-second proc that increases the rate at which your cooldowns recover. Only Rank 1 Ineffable Truth is B-Tier, while Rank 2 is terrible and not worth using in almost any situation. The proc causes your cooldowns to tick down faster.

Gushing Wound Icon Gushing Wound is a single-target damage proc that scales well with the Haste is offered by Marksmanship's toolkit.

Masterful Icon Masterful increases the Mastery you gain from all sources and is a decent to great Corruption, depending on how much Mastery you have on your gear.

Racing Pulse Icon Racing Pulse is a large 4-second Haste proc that will roughly have 30% uptime. It pairs well with Expedient and is a decent choice that works in practically all situations.

Surging Vitality Icon Surging Vitality gives you an occasional Versatility proc when you take damage. Different encounters can yield wildly different uptimes on this Corruption, but on average it is a decent choice.

Void Ritual Icon Void Ritual is a huge 20-second secondary stat proc with roughly 30% uptime. It only procs once per minute, but lasts for a long time and is a substantial DPS increase when you do have it.

C Tier Corruptions

Deadly Momentum Icon Deadly Momentum gives you a 30-second stacking Crit buff. Crit is undesirable for Marksmanship, making this a poor Corruption.

Versatile Icon Versatile increases the Versatility you gain from all sources. Its value depends heavily on the amount of Versatility on your gear, but it is generally a poor choice compared to Haste and Mastery options.

F Tier Corruptions

Twilight Devastation Icon Twilight Devastation does AoE damage based on your maximum health. It only works at relatively close range and is not particularly good for its Corruption, so we do not recommend it.

Glimpse of Clarity Icon Glimpse of Clarity is a proc that reduces the cooldown of your next spell cast. It is not good for Marksmanship Hunters in any situation.

Echoing Void Icon Echoing Void deals ticking damage based on your health. It is terrible in all situations and is never worth using.

Corruption Weapon for Marksmanship Hunter

Whispering Eldritch Bow Icon Whispering Eldritch Bow is the Ny'alotha Corruption Weapon for Marksmanship Hunters. It comes with the Whispered Truths Icon Whispered Truths Corruption Affix, which has a chance to reduce the cooldown of a random Hunter ability when you attack. This cooldown reduction can affect almost any Hunter ability, meaning that some efficiency is lost whenever it reduces the cooldown of a utility ability. Because of this, Dominion, Lurker Beyond Dreams Icon Dominion, Lurker Beyond Dreams is the preferred weapon at the endgame. It has a higher item level, and it allows you to sink your Corruption into better affixes on other items.

Corruption Simulations for Marksmanship Hunter

Single-Target DPS per Corruption Point

The top chart is more generally useful. Corruption is a resource that we want to minimize wherever we can, and the top chart provides you an idea of which Corruption affixes provide the most DPS for the Corruption they add to your gear. The bottom chart is more of a showcase of the DPS potential of the Corruptions.

We do not recommend making choices based off of this chart. We recommend using the "DPS per Corruption Point" chart instead.

Tips for Dealing With Corruption Effects

Your Legendary Cloak, Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve Icon Ashjra'kamas, Shroud of Resolve, will have a special on-use effect that clears all Corruption effects from you. This should be used if you get hit by a Thing From Beyond while above 60 Corruption. Otherwise, use it whenever you are in a very sticky situation, such as being slowed inside a voidzone. You should also use it if you are meant to be stacked with your group, and you get an Eye of Corruption on you.

How Much Corruption Should I Run As A Marksmanship Hunter

Generally speaking, anything below 40 is considered safe and can be used in all situations. If the content you are doing is easy, and you are confident that you can successfully Feign, Trap, or Stun almost all the Things from Beyond, then you can run up to 60. We do not recommend running above 60 in any sort of competitive environment.
