Azerite Traits and Essences, introduced in Battle for Azeroth, need to be chosen correctly, to ensure optimal performance. On this page, we explain how to pick your major and minor essences and which traits are best.

This page is part of our Shadow Priest PvP Guide.

1.

Azerite Essences for Shadow Priests

Essences allow players to customize their characters while adding a new ability to use. This section will cover the best overall Azerite Essences for Shadow Priests in PvP.

For a general guide to all the essences, as well as how to obtain them and increase their ranks, check out our Essence guide.

Before reading this page, you should have a good understanding of the PvP playstyle of a Shadow Priest. So we advise you to read our dedicated page on the subject.

1.1.

Major Essences

Conflict and Strife Icon Conflict and Strife not only helps with survivability by granting you additional Versatility, it also gives you the ability Void Shift Icon Void Shift as a baseline ability. This is by far the best Major Essence to use when playing a Shadow Priest.

1.2.

Minor Essences

In addition to having a Major Essence, you can choose two Minor Essences to place in your neck at Heart of Azeroth Levels 55 and 65.

Memory of Lucid Dreams Icon Memory of Lucid Dreams gives you the power Lucid Dreams Icon Lucid Dreams. This gives your spells and abilities a chance to refund Insanity you used and heal you. This is great for increasing your damage, as you will frequently be refunded Insanity throughout a match.

Conflict and Strife Icon Conflict and Strife gives you the Minor Power, Strife Icon Strife. Because you will likely be the primary target for most teams, the Versatility you gain from it will significantly increase your survivability and damage output.

Breath of the Dying Icon Breath of the Dying grants the minor ability Lethal Strikes Icon Lethal Strikes. This will increase your overall damage output and also help with your survivability.

The Crucible of Flame Icon The Crucible of Flame minor gives you abilities a chance to put a DoT on the enemy you damaged. This is great for increasing your overall damage output.

2.

Azerite Traits for Shadow Priests

Azerite traits are unlocked in you helm, shoulders and chest. With each Azerite level in your neck, you get closer to unlocking the center trait in your gear. These traits vary from increasing damage or healing of certain abilities to helping increase your survivability. Depending on what traits you use, it can completely alter your playstyle and what talents you should be using.

For more information about Azerite traits and your Heart of Azeroth, please refer to our dedicated guide.

2.1.

Outer Rings

Below are the best Outer Ring traits.

  1. Death Throes Icon Death Throes
  2. Heart of Darkness Icon Heart of Darkness
  3. Spiteful Apparitions Icon Spiteful Apparitions

There is one trait that you are going to want in all pieces of your Azerite gear and it is Death Throes Icon Death Throes. This will drastically increase your spread pressure. Spiteful Apparitions Icon Spiteful Apparitions both increase your sustained damage output. If you have corrupted gear, Heart of Darkness Icon Heart of Darkness provides a strong boost to your secondary stats.

2.2.

Middle Ring

Below are the best Middle Ring traits.

  1. Unstable Flames Icon Unstable Flames
  2. Heed My Call Icon Heed My Call
  3. Overwhelming Power Icon Overwhelming Power
  4. Earthlink Icon Earthlink

The Middle and Inner Rings are important for additional damage. Unstable Flames Icon Unstable Flames, Overwhelming Power Icon Overwhelming Power, and Earthlink Icon Earthlink give an increase to your stats. These are minor stat boosts, but still increase your damage. Heed My Call Icon Heed My Call will help increase both your single target and spread pressure.

2.3.

Below are the best Inner Ring traits.

  1. Resounding Protection Icon Resounding Protection
  2. Azerite Fortification Icon Azerite Fortification
