Windwalker Monk PvP Azerite Traits and Essences (BfA / Patch 8.3)
Azerite Traits and Essences, introduced in Battle for Azeroth, need to be chosen correctly, to ensure optimal performance. On this page, we explain how to pick your major and minor essences and which traits are best.
This page is part of our Windwalker Monk PvP Guide.
Azerite Essences for Windwalker Monks
Essences allow players to customize their characters while adding a new ability to use. This section will cover the best overall Azerite Essences for Windwalker Monks in PvP.
For a general guide to all the essences, as well as how to obtain them and increase their ranks, check out our Essence guide.
Before reading this page, you should have a good understanding of the PvP playstyle of a Windwalker Monk. So we advise you to read our dedicated page on the subject.
Conflict from Conflict and Strife grants us Reverse Harm as a baseline ability. Reverse Harm is a key ability for generating Chi. This Major Essence should be taken if you are going to be using PvP talents like Ride the Wind or Grapple Weapon.
Versus teams that will be stacked often throughout an arena match, Essence of the Focusing Iris gives you the Major Power Focused Azerite Beam. This power deals a large amount of damage and should be used as often as possible in arena.
If the enemy team will not be stacked, The Crucible of Flame is the best Major Essence. The Major Power ( Concentrated Flame) deals strong single-target damage to your target. With a short 30 second recharge time, the Major Power lines up well with Fists of Fury.
In addition to having a Major Essence, you can choose two Minor Essences to place in your neck at Heart of Azeroth Levels 55 and 65.
Conflict and Strife grants a very powerful Versatility Minor Power ( Strife). Not only do your spells have a chance to give you Versatility, but any loss of control to your character does too. This means that, if teams stun you and try to swap to you, you have additional Versatility and take less damage.
Lucid Dreams (from Memory of Lucid Dreams) gives your spells and abilities a chance to refund 50% of the Energy spent on them and heal you. This is great for being able to use Tiger Palm more often to generate more Chi.
Azerite Traits for Windwalker Monks
Azerite traits are unlocked in you helm, shoulders and chest. With each Azerite level in your neck, you get closer to unlocking the center trait in your gear. These traits vary from increasing damage or healing of certain abilities to helping increase your survivability. Depending on what traits you use, it can completely alter your playstyle and what talents you should be using.
For more information about Azerite traits and your Heart of Azeroth, please refer to our dedicated guide.
Below are the best Outer Ring traits.
The most important trait you are going to want to get in all pieces of your gear is Open Palm Strikes. This gives you additional damage when you use Fists of Fury. Fists of Fury make up a large majority of your damage and this is crucial for your burst damage. Other traits like Sunrise Technique and Fury of Xuen increase your overall sustained damage as well.
Below are the best Middle Ring traits.
The Middle and Inner Rings are important for additional defensives. Windwalker Monks are very weak when they are put into stuns. Traits like Azerite Veins and Shimmering Haven help drastically. Traits like Earthlink and Elemental Whirl increase your damage.
Below are the best Inner Ring traits.
All of these traits give you additional ways of surviving. These are all passive, but are crucial to have.
