Genshin Impact has just released its “To Snezhnaya and the Future” special program, offering one of the best and most detailed looks yet at the game’s next main region, and beyond.
Rather than a typical reveal, this presentation focused on design philosophy, long-term direction, and how Snezhnaya will change both the story and gameplay systems moving forward.
Snezhnaya Is Not Just Another Region
Unlike previous regions, Snezhnaya is not being introduced as something unknown. Players already know it as the land of Cryo, the base of the Fatui, and a major political force in Teyvat. What is changing is how the game will introduce it.
Originally, it was conceived as a hostile, almost “villainous” nation, but Snezhnaya is now positioned as something far more complex, like a power actively opposing fate itself and challenging the Heavenly Principles.
That change places it at the center of the main story, especially as tensions across Teyvat continue to escalate.
A Nation Built on Power and Influence
The program also reinforced just how dominant Snezhnaya has become.
The Fatui’s reach now expands over all regions, and the nation itself already holds six out of the seven Gnosis, with only the Pyro one remaining. A lot of Archons willingly gave theirs up, hinting that Snezhnaya’s actions may not be purely antagonistic, and the fact that they may not need their Gnosis that much in reality.
This ambiguity is clearly intentional, and it is something the upcoming story arc is expected to explore in depth.
New Lore – Fae, Hyperborea, and Cosmic Links

Snezhnaya will also expand the game’s deeper lore in a major way.
The developers confirmed the introduction of the fae that we already saw in the current story with characters such as Flins and Linnea. It is an ancient race linked to the region, alongside connections to the lost civilization of Hyperborea.
These elements link back directly into bigger concepts like:
- The Heavenly Principles
- Angels
- And of course Descenders
In short, Snezhnaya is not just another step in the story, but it is where many long-running mysteries will start to converge.
A Harsher, More Industrial World
Snezhnaya mixes harsh, frozen landscapes with industrial infrastructure, drawing inspiration from Eastern Europe and Arctic regions without directly copying them.
One of the standout ideas is the use of trains, but not just as transport, but as living spaces. These moving environments can function as hubs, cultural spaces, or even storytelling tools, reflecting a society built around survival and adaptation.

Gameplay Is Evolving Beyond Exploration
The biggest change, however, is for the gameplay. Genshin Impact is moving further away from being “just” an open-world game and doubling down on interaction between systems. Exploration, combat, and environment are more and more interconnected, with more emphasis on player experimentation.
Cryo, in particular, is being expanded beyond simple elemental reactions. It will now:
- Change the terrain
- Affect movements more
- Interact more directly with different combat mechanics
The idea is to make fights feel less like isolated encounters and more like dynamic systems involving the environment itself.
Smarter Enemies and Better Combat
Enemy design is also getting an upgrade. Fatui characters, for example, will fight much more like coordinated squads, with more tactical combat style and forcing players to adapt rather than relying on simple rotations.
These changes also mean that the team is moving towards a more strategic combat system overall, especially when you combine it with interactions with the environment.
New Systems and Tools
Among the new things that get added there is a multi-purpose gadget that allows you to modify the environment and even share those changes with other players.
At the same time, character design is evolving as well, with future characters that will not just be defined by their role or element. Their identity will really influence gameplay mechanics and how they interact with the world.
Visual and Cinematic Upgrades
The developers also confirmed ongoing graphical improvements, particularly for character models. The goal is not to have something ultra-realistic, but to refine and improve the quality, maintain the game’s recognizable art style, and keep it accessible across platforms.
Another main thing is that they want to mix gameplay and storytelling more closely as well, with more real-time cinematic moments and dynamic interactions during quests and boss fights.
A Long-Term Vision, Not an Ending
Perhaps the most important point of the video is that Snezhnaya is not being treated as the “final chapter.”
The team explicitly rejected the idea of rushing toward an ending or artificially stretching the game. Instead, they see Genshin Impact as a long-term experience, with plans that could go through years or even decades.
With development expected to accelerate after Snezhnaya, the focus remains on consistent innovation rather than following trends. This was not a massive reveal filled with new characters or banners, but it may be one of the most important updates the game has had.
Snezhnaya is going to be a turning point, not just for the story, but for how the game actually plays.
