During the June 2026 State of Play livestream, Santa Monica Studio dropped a full 20 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage of the new God of War: Laufey. This entry follows Laufey, a legendary Jötunn (Frost Giant) warrior, the second wife of Kratos, & the mother of Atreus after her passing in the first game.

God of War: Laufey Coming Soon

This year’s State of Play brought a lot of new and returning iconic games, but one that many fans didn’t expect was a new God of War that, for once, wasn’t following Kratos or Atreus. Instead, we are following the path of Laufey, right as she enters the afterlife of the gods. But clearly something is clearly going wrong, as a new powerful force is rounding up newcomers that enter the afterlife

As for why, we currently do not know, and there’s no sign of when God of War: Laufey will be releasing, as this trailer was not just showcasing its gameplay and story concepts to get fans excited, but also announcing that it’s surprisingly still in development, despite how polished the showcase was.

Expanding the GoW Universe

Ever since the series delved into Norse mythology, fans have gotten gentle nods that other realms exist beyond Greek and Norse mythology. With so much on the table, who knows what lands or gods we could encounter next.

Still, this showcase already has fans pondering one question. Will we see past gods in this game? Past God of War entries show us some gods returning in spirit form, but in other cases, when a god is dead, they stay dead.

Will God of War: Laufey possibly show us some of the gods Kratos has fought during the Greek saga, or even more recent foes from Ragnarök?

Only time will tell, but until then keep an eye on our Other Games section for more updates.
