Most of the Hollow Knight: Silksong players have been calling the game too hard. The developers even released a patch that tuned the difficulty down. However, a few players would actually want to play the game in an even harder difficulty.
Well, it turns out, you do not have to wait to test your skills on the toughest difficulty. Players have uncovered a hidden cheat code that instantly unlocks Steel Soul mode, the game’s permadeath option.
Steel Soul makes the game harder than ever:
- Benches no longer act as respawn points
- Dying wipes your entire save file
In the original Hollow Knight, this mode was only available after completing the game at least once, but thanks to the following cheat, Silksong players can start their first run directly with this challenge. We recommend playing the game at least once on normal difficulty, as Steel Soul can make the experience less enjoyable on a first run.
How to Unlock Steel Soul Mode
- Launch Hollow Knight: Silksong
- Go to the Extras menu on the title screen
- Input the following sequence using your controller or keyboard:
- Up, Down, Up, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right
- If entered correctly, Steel Soul mode will now be unlocked, ready for a new playthrough.
Do not forget that Silksong has multiple save slots, so you can play Steel Soul without touching your normal runs. This mode is a ton of fun to experiment with, and if you love a real challenge, Steel Soul is definitely made for you!
Thanks to this cheat code, you can even try it out for your first run, saving you the time of having to complete the game a first time on normal.
