NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, just received the green light to create their own original characters. This announcement caught fans off guard, especially since the company had previously stated they could draw from Marvel’s entire roster of superheroes and villains.
Original Marvel Rivals Characters?
In an interview with MP1st, the creative director of Marvel Rivals, Guangyun Chen (also known as Guangguang), confirmed, “Yes, we are allowed to introduce original characters in Marvel Rivals.”
This revelation opens up a vast pool of characters for Marvel Rivals to incorporate. Initially, some competitors and fans speculated that NetEase would eventually run out of characters that Disney would permit them to use. However, the ability to not only utilize well-known or obscure characters but also create original ones is an unexpected turn of events. While the game director didn’t confirm any specific details, he advised fans to “stay tuned.”
Despite NetEase gaining this significant creative freedom, it does not necessarily mean we will see these original creations anytime soon. Fans are aware that the team is working on several upcoming seasons that need to align with the current overarching story and plot. Therefore, it could be quite a while—possibly even years—before we see an original character for Marvel Rivals.
This situation raises another question: How long can this storyline sustain itself between seasons? With an endless number of characters at their disposal, will the story remain engaging and relevant in the coming years?
